Jeopardy discussion

I like Mayim. I like Ken. I liked Buzzy. I liked most of the guest hosts. It doesn’t really matter to me who hosts, as long as they don’t focus too much attention on themselves or completely botch their hosting duties. (No, taking an extra quarter-second to confirm or deny a response does not qualify.)
Mayim’s perceived transgressions outside of Jeopardy! do not rise to the level of disqualifying her from hosting. Not even close.

The whole “controversy” and all the bile directed toward Mayim are absolutely ridiculous to me, and people really need to chill.

Considering that the program is sponsored by the manufacturer of “snake-oil brain pills” (Prevagen), some of y’all for consistency might want to cut Mayim some slack – or write a sternly-worded letter to the producers.

If they wanted to go full on woke they would have picked a black woman or a gay woman. Robin Roberts is black and gay .

Thank you, I agree!

And oddly, I thought Michael Richards was the best host. But his sins exceed those of Mayim.

If nothing else, Mayim should be disqualified for her “fashion sense.”

But I would watch no matter who is the host. Hell I watch the Washington Nationals games and their announcers are Dumb and Dumber.

I look forward to her Margaret Hamilton bio-pic.

For the most part, I agree, because I’m not opposed to her hosting because of her “brain pills”-hawking, her statement about female modesty, or her comments about vaccines. I just think she’s not good at hosting.

I agree about Michael Richards. However, even before his bad behavior came out, his self-selection left a bad taste in my mouth. It reminded me of when George W Bush tasked Dick Cheney to pick his running mate and Cheney picked himself.

Ok, I got Stevie Nicks, Eeyore, and Andorra.

And every one was a guess.

(well, I was actually pretty confident about Eeyore)

mmm

Andorra sounds so fictional, like Brigadoon or Shangri-la.

I love the fact that they’re milking the “regular Virginia” thing for all it’s worth. I hope the contestant who said that is getting royalties.

Man, I completely forgot there was a country called Andorra. I had nothing, so I guessed Monaco.

Weak, I know.

So we see the FJ category, and I say I would be a lot, because before I’d be on Jeopardy!, I’d study European countries.

But I noted that it could be a tricky question, “like ‘what is the national export of Andorra’.” !

I can’t believe I got it from the category. Take that Stevie Nicks, and stick it in your Eeyore.

My opinion also. To me, she seems like she’s a first-time host instead of someone who’s done it many times. It makes me think she’ll never grow into the role. Her selection makes me think they felt they had to have a woman because reasons. Whatever.

Well, first, not everyone out here considers her that bad.

And second, what more reason does the show need to have a woman host than “whatever”? It’s about time. Since I don’t think she’s worse than Ken, (they just have different weaknesses) “all things being equal” as it were I’d vote to have her just because she’s a woman.

I suspect there is no woman in the world that a lot of Jeopardy fans wouldn’t find unacceptable for reasons facially unrelated to her gender. Not a single one of the 3.7B women alive.

I dunno. Let’s get Kristen Bell up there.

mmm

If the billet can only be filled by a brainy woman, Danica “Winnie Cooper” McKellar is just wasting over at some dominoes show.

I suspect this is quite true. (And there’s no end of research, such as studies involving ‘identical resumes submitted with male or female names/photos’, showing that in general women are judged more harshly than are men even when all else is identical.)

But in this case I must reluctantly agree that Mayim is less satisfactory as a host than is Ken. (The ‘extra half second before she acknowledges an answer’ thing is something I’ll never get used to, for one thing.)

That’s not to say that there’s not a different woman who would be as good as, or even better than Ken. As mentioned above, Kristen Bell or Danica McKellar might prove to be excellent at the job, and there are no doubt others worth a try.

I read too far ahead in this thread before watching Thursday’s episode, so Andorra got spoiled for me.
Didn’t matter. I would have had zero shot at a correct guess. I’ve never heard of the Spanish March, and geographically I have no idea where the Moops Moors were in relation to “Christian Europe” to even make an educated guess.
I suppose something bordering Spain would make the most sense for a complete shot in the dark, but as European geography is not a strength of mine, I wouldn’t even be able to tell you whether Andorra borders Spain or not.

I was actually quite impressed that two of the three players got it right.
