The Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon for Muscular Dystrophy is on this weekend. Are you going to watch?
I grew up watching it. As a matter of fact, I never knew Labor Day before Jerry Lewis.
This was rather annoying in the 1970’s when there was only the three network channels, so more than likely, you were stuck with Jerry. Now because of satellite television, the internet, video games and so-on, that people are not watching this show anymore. Maybe Grandma wants to see it. I would want to see it to see an anceint Jerry Lewis stay up all night without the use of chemicals.
The telethon used to boast that they made more money this year than last year and the goal has always been to make more money that the year before.
Our CBS affiliate did it every year with local MDA events, keeping the news people up all night. Our local amusement park was open all night as a fundraiser. It was pretty fun. I remember McDonalds being a major contributor.
Jerry Lewis then sings that sappy song towards the end of the marathon where Jerry Lewis cries at the end. “You’ll never walk alone.”
No more Ed McMahon! Charo did the show last year. The Gen Y kids ask, “Who is Charo?” Well Charo was a latina woman with large breasts who used to shake her can and say “Chaaaaaaaaaaro!” in front of a crowd.
I wonder if there has been any breakthroughs in research for Muscular Dystrophy since the telethon began? Has this program made a difference?
Do they show the telethon in France, since this is the only country who likes him?
