What’s the deal with guests on the Jerry Springer show? Are the guests and their problems real? Or are they just attention-hungry weirdos who really, really, really want to be on t.v?
I suppose there’s a minority of people who’d like to handle their disagreements by shouting at the other guy/gal on television, but enough of them for a daily show?
In 1998, there were 16 people who claimed that they had been on Springer as fake guests. There were, around the same time, numerous reports that the fights were fake. You can find most of those stories by Googling.
My answer: Who the f%#k cares? Anyone stupid enough to watch the show doesn’t deserve to know.
Real answer: It appears that the show is often orchestrated. Ergo, the guests are preselected and their interaction staged.
My friend was on the Richard Bey show a while ago (remember him?) They supplied a limo to the show and a hotel room, the contract said that if their appearance and presentation were above average in any entertaining fashion, they would be compsensated if thier appearance was selected for either promotional footage, special events, ect. A girl I knew from HS was interning in Chicago for the Jerry Springer Show back in the day before he started having beads for the girls who take their tops off. She said that they would pay for anything “out of the ordinary and entertaining” if it would arise. Also the same thing with royalties if there is some “Jerry’s most Outrageous Moments” video. They even had a contract listing the show will not liable for any damages recieved for being a guest, you also have to have health insurance, too! I’m sure some guests decide to go on and stage fights and situations…yesterday, he had Brother and Sister love cirlces. I’m sure they were laughing all the way to the bank.

I assume that sadly they are real, and also mostly wierdos who really really really wna to be on TV.
However bizarre the problems may seem its a big wide world out there and if its possible its very likley its happening.
My daughter’s ex boyfriends brother and his wife appeared on Springer a few years ago. Round trip tickets to Cincinnati and 2 nights at a night hotel. The show was about normal healthy people that marry handicapped people. They apparently did not generate enough sparks because their segment only lasted a few minutes.

As far as the show knows {wink, wink} it’s all real. The guests, probably the majority of them, lie about their situations and Jerry’s staff doesn’t exactly have any fact checkers.

I’m too busy to watch much t.v. but I have to admit that I… gasp… kinda like the Springer show. It’s so bad it’s good. So dumb it’s brilliant (well, brilliant in a carnival blacklight kinda way).
I’ve been to a taping of the Jerry Springer show. After seeing how pathetically lame most of the guests’ confrontations are, I can assure you that the show is not scripted by anyone with an IQ greater than his or her shoe size.
Do people contrive to fake scenarios meriting an appearance on the show? I’m sure it happens with some regularity. Does appearing on the show spur people to exaggerate their problems/quirks/depravities? I’m sure it happens with great regularity. During breaks in the taping, producers isolate the guests and talk to them intensely. What was said I do not know. Being egged on by producers – much less a jeering crowd eager for blood – must undoubtedly distort guests’ presentations of what may be real crises.
And how does this change anything?
There were episodes that were very obviously faked. I dunno, maybe a quarter of the shows? I do think that most were genuine (as in, genuine morons telling the truth about their moronic lives), but the faked ones, I think, were easy to spot. The rhythm of the conversations just wasn’t convincing.
That is all.
I think it’s 50/50. Sometimes it seems less convincing than others.

I think it’s very often staged, but we must not underestimate the propensity of the masses to act idiotic just for attention. To me, whether the confrontations are real or faked is irrelevant. The fact that actual people will go on television and even pretend this stuff is funny enough. Brainless, sure; but still funny. When Pokemon is on three times a day, JS starts to feel cerebral.
Upon further review, it seems my previous post (although posted for humor’s sake) may have been a tad over the line for this particular forum, language-wise.
