This is my first posting on this site, and I got here by virtue of the subject above: “why do people say Jesus H Christ?” It’s a very old thread, I believe, I came through an archive page.
I’m determined to answer the damn thing then get on with being a part of this wonderful aladdin’s cave for pointless trivia geeks like me.
I believe people say “Jesus H. Christ” as a throwback to the days when it was not the done thing to use blasphemous language. By sticking “H” in the middle of your curse, you can claim you’re not referring to the REAL Jesus…
There. That’s my Straight Dope virginity surrendered.
Look forward to speaking with you all soon.
Please go back to the front page of this message board and read the forum descriptions.
This thread should be in “Comments On Cecil’s Columns.”
So that’s where I’m sending it.
Of course this is the infamous Why do folks say “Jesus H. Christ”?

Hey, I know I’m only the new guy, but I saw “Comment on Cecil’s Posts” and it didn’t seem to me that it was the right place to click:
a) because the subjects are generally posted by other people
b) because it seemed I should comment on Cecil’s Replies, rather than Cecil’s Posts.
Just out to cause trouble, that’s me.
I’m impressed with the speed of the reply/correction I received, though. Awesome. Don’t you people sleep?
