Ummm…noooo. What my position would be is: my sons and daughters (and yours) need places to live when they grow up, whether that be a single-family house, or a condo, or an apartment building. We don’t have a Star-Trek type of matter converter that can create walls, ceilings, water pipes, whatever, out of sub-atomic particles. So where do these things come from? Or are you proposing that EVERYBODY has to sit out in the rain until someone else dies first, and then gets that shelter, first come, first served? And exactly how does this translate into pillaging the planet??

Why does Bush look like a warmonger? Well, the answer is in your second paragraph. How long has it been since the Gulf War? Eleven years. How long has it been since the attacks on the World Trade Center? One year. Which is the more immediate threat to the United States? Al-Qaeda. They have announced that more attacks are planned, more deadly than 9/11.

So why has Bush been pushing so hard for action against Iraq? Iraq is the one place Al-Qaeda is not. Saddam is very unfriendly to fundamentalist Islam. Experts on the Middle East also agree that Saddam is very unlikely to give any weapons of mass destruction to a terrorist group; he would want such weapons only under his control. Invading an Arab country is almost certainly going to anger and inflame all the Muslim populations in the region, validating the view that we are a threat that needs to be fought.

A war with Iraq will require significant military and financial resources, none of which will be available to hunt Al-Qaeda or work to prevent a future attack. No evidence has been released that Saddam is close to building a nuclear weapon, or has plans to attack the United States. So why now?

Bush hasn’t answered any of these questions. All questions are answered with “Saddam is bad, we must invade Iraq.” He was pushing for immediate unilateral action, without any post-invasion gameplan, against the wishes of former U.S. generals and the rest of the world. This is not the behavior of someone for whom war is a grave last resort.
