I just want to point out that installing and maintaining a properly running GNU/Linux system is almost as tricky and interesting a game as nethack.
No, really, that’s about it.
(Computers: C64, TI-99/4A, Tandy 1000, Mac 512 (Also serving as goldfish bowl), Mac Quadra, iMac, 486dx33, IBM PCjr, IBM PC-AT, IBM PC-XT, Osbourne, IBM PS/2 50z, P-100, PII-233, Celeron 333, Duron 600, T-Bird 1.3. All mostly functional)
It’s getting pretty usable, if you have work to do, but most of the entertainment value in it is, yes, installing and upgrading things and making it do odd things. My 2.2.6 install currently makes the scroll-lock light flash messages in Morse Code.
Two days before netscape vanished IE suddenly started working again. And no I didn’t download anything.
This computer has 64 megs of ram, and up to 2 weeks ago I couldn’t view a video clip over 100k in size. Two weeks ago they upgrade the OS (to 9.2 or something).
Now the first page of ANYTHING I print is puke green–just the text and any lines on the page are fusha (sp?).
Netscape won’t open pages like CNN…
IE can run movie files, but can’t support more than 2 windows open before it runs out of memory.
I found out I can get 4 IE windows open if I run Word and Excel WHILE IE is running.
60% of the time I log out of my account (why I have multiple accounts when I’m the only person who uses this I do not know) the login application fails and the computer can’t restart unless you unplug it.
Let us not go into the living hell that is the installation of that CD-RW drive that still doesn’t recognize CD-RWs as valid media…
At home, my PC…
Netscape occasionally crashes when I’m trying to find something really fast (like opening and closing 20-30 windows).
Zonealert crashed for the second time in over a year.
And for some reason after zonealert crashed my desktop icons got screwed up, so I rebooted.
The only equipment I’ve ever had difficulty installing in my PC was a new IBM optical mouse and that’s because the CD that came with the mouse didn’t work. I got the software from the IBM website and everything’s fine now.
My CD-burner is another story. I installed it fine but for some reason I haven’t been able to do much with it. Could be the cheap-ass bundled software.
I once used my Mac to slay an enraged cave bear. It wouldn’t be so remarkable, except for the fact that it was a classic SE.
My LCII could install its own programs while distilling wine from water. I tried that on my PC and the resultant Merlot was unpalatable. Substandard.
Oh, how I love the Mac / PC debates. Particularly when they revolve around nothing more than peoples anecdotes. There are nearly 50 MM personal computers in the US alone. A sampling of, say, ONE doesn’t do much for me.
Updating your Mac OS should not affect your printer and output. If your printer is having problems, it’s very likely that the problem is the printer and has nothing to do with the OS at all. Have you checked its toner level, and run through the standard troubleshooting steps?
A Mac running 9.2 with only 64MB of RAM? How old is this computer? What versions of IE and Netscape is it running? If it’s older than three or four years and has an older browser, I’m not surprised you’re having the problems you are. (BTW, Netscape not being able to view certain sites is a beef with Netscape, and not the OS.) Have you tried adjusting the amount of memory allocated to your browsers? That may help.
If you can, ask whoever can make such changes to disable the multiple users function from your computer. If only you use the computer, you don’t need it, and it’s a waste of time for both you and the machine.
With regards to your CD-RW drive-- if you need to use CD-RW media, why is an incompatible drive installed? If you don’t need CD-RWs, why are you using them?
Can you replace the drive or media with ones that better suit your needs?
I don’t mean to come across as a defensive Mac fanatic. Honestly, one thing I despise about being a Mac user is being seen as the same as or in league with people like the OP. As a Mac user, I’ve had to grit my teeth and put up with unbelievable amounts of bullshit and crap from both friends and total strangers about my choice of computing platform. But I’ve never been the raving lunatic that Mac users are believed to be, and I detest and try to avoid being lumped in with them. I hope I’m not coming across that way. It just sounds to me like your computer could use some work, and I’m hoping I can help.
Don’t be ridiculous, you ridiculous peddler of ridiculousness. My personal experiences are CLEARLY normal, while all those that are different are CLEARLY the exceptions to the rule.
Take a step back and think, my freind. If anyone should be pitted, it would be you.
I understand what it’s like to have great euthsiasim for something and see someone disagree with you or do/say something you believe to be wrong. But this is not a good way to respond. You two have different ideas. It’s ok. Move on, to fight greater battles than this.
I don’t know Jet Jaguar from Adam, but he seems like a decent fellow and didn’t really do anything to warrant pitting. To be honest with you, I didn’t have the slightest idea what a sacral brain even was so I guess in that sense, he was one up on me. As far as the PC vs MAC debate goes, I can understand if Steve Jobs holds resentment towards PC’s but that’s about it.
A little advice, chill out a bit dude, you’ll live longer. Welcome to the boards
Wait until you get a load of Guinastasia.
[sub]And no, I’m not going to mention the current post-count champ, because he’s an asshole that doesn’t deserve any further attention.[/sub]
Copper Pin: Listen, fucktard. I’ve installed Windows XP on 5 PCs, some homebuilt and some OEM. NONE have required any drivers or setting up. Windows XP does everything automatically. The only thing you tell it is your name and timezone, and the system boots to your desktop fully configured. Want to install some additional hardware? Go ahead. The next time you boot, windows says “Windows has detected new hardware and is now configuring it. Your new hardware is now configured.” Done. You can use it now. The ONLY time this process didn’t work perfectly is with my new Lexmark all-in-one printer. However, since it was released over a year after the operating system, you certainly can’t fault the computer. Even here, the operation was simple. Put in Lexmark’s CD, plug in the printer, click the next button. Done.
Ever wondered why you hear more about more problems with PCs than Macs? Because there are TWENTY TIMES AS MANY PC USERS AS MAC USERS. What else? A little something called freedom of choice. With a PC, you can choose to upgrade it, if you want, by buying a $50 generic POS motherboard instead of the $75 great name brand. Don’t be surprised if something breaks when you cheap out like that. With a Mac, you take what Apple gives you, at Apple’s inflated prices. No choice in the matter. By no stretch of imagination or the truth does that make Macs better.
Pulling shit out of your ass to defend your beloved Apple from the truth is not a good idea. There is a reason Steve Jobs needs a reality distortion field.
She said just that? You’d better hope she did…hmm, I checked the thread, and she did not. I think this clearly falls under the category of “attributing false quotes”.
We’ll miss you.
To respond to this, I will quote one of the greatest technological wizards of our time, who says:
Clearly. You are also good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like you.
In my ever so humble opinion, nearly any model Mac or PC is sufficient to do the job it is intended to do; typically play games and scour the internet for busty red-heads. It is the operators who are the wild-cards, many of whom should be made to go hot-tubbing with their monitors. Witness our friend, Mr. Cupric Pin here.
