This fish has been renamed by some groups as the “goliath grouper” or something like that. Don’t know how long before everyone else adopts that.
Odd that it has that name. They don’t look particularly like any Jews that I’ve ever known (either in person, or celebrities). They do have a certain resemblance to actors like Charles Laughton, Thayer David, and maybe Vincent Gardenia.
(A similar event happend a few years ago, when the squawfish was rename the pikeminnow.)
Similar to renaming place names through the US Geological Survey. Modern sensibilities have renamed “Nigger Bill Canyon” to Negro Bill Canyon in the state of Utah.
Another area there was/is called “Mollies Nipple” I’m not sure what it’s officially called now. “Squaw Peak” is another suspect designation. It’s not easy to have official names changed, either.
“Chinks Peak” has been renamed as well. Hang on to those old topos if you’re an unreconstructed knuckle dragging neanderthal, I suppose.
