I was just reading an interview with Eliza Orlins from last year’s Survivor series and she mentioned how she was only the second Jewish player on the show (following Ethan Zohn). Is that true? Out of the 150 people who’ve been on the show, only two of them have been Jewish?

The Jewish population in the U.S. is actually about a whopping 2%. The point still stands however. It is pretty proportional.
I never realized that the percentage of the national population that was Jewish was only two percent. I live in an area where it’s higher, and I guess I was just projecting this on the whole country.
What’s the percentage of out gay people in the US? There have only been three that I know of so far (Richard, Scout and Amy). Coby’s being… coy…

I’ve heard that Sonja is a lesbian, but having been voted off the first episode, there was never time for it to become an issue on the show.

And Burnett has said that one of the players from season two outed himself in a confessional the first day but they didn’t show it because they didn’t want the person to be known only as “this year’s gay guy.”
I don’t think they’ve ever revealed who it was.
I thought Sean Kenniff from the original survivor was Jewish as well.

Either way, if you had added one more Jewish contestant, I think it would have gone to two percent. As you say, still proportional.
As for gays, you can’t just count the openly gay people. The discussed ten percent includes closeted as well as open homosexuals.
Think about how many closeted gays there have probably been.
I figure in Australia, Mitchell and Jeff were gay.
I wonder if that explains why she was so skeeved out and useless during the pig-wrangling challenge.
I’m sure she is a Reform Jew. All the jews I know eat pork chops (but then, I live in the South).

As for the gay Survivors, I think it’s a “trend” for reality shows to cast some “token” gay characters to stir things up. Not so much with Jews.
Ian Rosenberger from the current season might also be Jewish. Hard to tell, though - I am working from the name only (and that technique is notoriously unreliable).
And keep in mind that out of that 2%, a good portion would opt-out due to the probable need to eat bugs, pig, or other unkosher food. (If they were really starving, it would be permissible, but I don’t think most observant jews would put themselves into that situation by choice and consider it to be starving.)
That and we own all the banks, so why would we need a million dollars? ;j
IIRC, Ethan did manage to keep kosher while he was on. I remember that he won a breakfast platter in one of the food auctions, and he gave the bacon away because he couldn’t eat it.

That level of kashrut would be good enough for some jews (myself included), but most observant jews wouldn’t eat the rest of the breakfast platter if it was prepared in a non-kosher kitchen. (Which it definately was unless the bacon was prepared elsewhere…)
