Anyone know the story behind this song? Could he really not get any airplay in Mobile, Ala. until he added saxophones to his compositions? Google and Wiki weren’t any help.

It’s probably a reference to Muscle Shoals Studios and the Muscle Shoals sound. His first albums stiffed badly and he then went south to find his sound. AFAIK, none of his songs are sax heavy.
Just a hook, in my opinion.
He probably doesn’t really want a pencil-thin moustache, either.
