While perhaps technically true, some of the earliest drawings and sculptures made by humans (and perhaps even pre-humans) are–basically–porn. So you’re cutting it (or not cutting it, I suppose) pretty close.
You’re missing option 3, which is to try and change society’s expectations. This usually involves doing your own thing, but also outreach. And it happens quite often–it’s what happens every time something goes from in fashion to out of fashion.
Point is, society isn’t fixed, and we are part of society, so we can try to change it. This is true for silly things like what facial hair is fashionable, and bigger things like getting rid of bigotry and stuff.
I will point out that my dad wears a mustache because it looks good on him, and he does not face societal disapproval in any significant degree. No one gives him a hard time about it, and no one seems to not like him because of it.
And, frankly, he wouldn’t look like my dad without it. I’ve seen the pics.
I’m not suggesting everyone should bow to society’s expectations. Feel free to be a rebel and defy traditions. Let your freak flag fly.
But own it. Don’t pretend to be a rebel with empty gestures that nobody cares about. You’re not truly rebelling unless you’re meeting resistance.
No, that’s not a third option. Changing society’s expectations (or at least making the attempt) is often a part of rebelling.
