I went caroling last weekend. 5th year I’ve done it, and while I really enjoy it (yes, I think it’s perfectly OK for an atheist to enjoy singing hymns to appreciative Christian folk on the approach of a significant calendar event for them), the damn songs get stuck in my head for weeks! Ack!
Anybody else suffering Jingle Bell Fatigue (it probably wouldn’t hurt to rehearse something like Silver Bells or O Come O Come Emmanuel with a rock-generation contingent before trying it on the street)?
I’ve had “Telephone Hour” from Bye Bye Birdie (“What’s the story, monring glory? What’s the word, hummingbird? Tell me quick about Hugo and Kim!”) stuck in my head for two months straight. I’m so glad there’s annoying Christmas music to fill my brain now instead.
I love Christmas music–which is why I stay the hell out of the malls between Thanksgiving and Christmas, because that friggin’ abominable Muzak makes me want to strangle somebody.
I’m in my college’s Glee Club and we had our Christmas Vespers service a couple of weeks ago (they schedule it super early so it doesn’t fall during finals). Being a senior, it was my last Vespers <sniff!>. “O Come O Come Emmanuel” is always the processional, which we begin singing in the vestibule and then come down the aisles and go on stage. It is a wonderful moment. I sang my li’l heart out on “O Holy Night,” which is hands down my favorite. I don’t mind getting the Vespers songs stuck in my head because the arrangements we do are really beautiful.
