Jinx, you're a fucking jackass.

I was simply stating my personal preference. Whether that affects his decision to join or not, I don’t know or care. I can’t imagine why my personal preference would matter to him, anyway.

Almost all the questions asked here can be answered by a person doing some kind of research (like reading the Constitution), yet we still have meaningful and educational discussions from them. People shouldn’t be berated for it, in any forum.

That’s no way for people to act on a board that’s supposed to be for learning.

Actually, the thing that I found most annoying in that thread wasn’t tiel0301’s profane overreaction, it was the group grope of Dopers who lined up to say, “Well, I have read the Constitution, and it is quick to read.”

Congratu-fucking-lations to everyone who has read the Constitution. Now stop patting yourself on the back, get over your mock surprise that most Americans aren’t models of a civic ideal, and answer the damn question at hand.

No matter how you cut it, tiel is a jerk. Long-time lurker or clueless newbie, there is no excuse to introduce yourself to the Board by cussing out one of its members, no matter what the provocation. In this case, there was none that should have impacted on tiel in any way. If we want to take Jinx to task, that is out prerogitive. It is not the prerogitive of an outsider any more than it is of the man on the street to entor your house and swear at you because of the color of your carpet or the names of your children. If that is going to be **tiel’**s attitude and approach, down to shrugging of a Mod warning, then fuck him and the horse he rode in on. We fight ignorance, not stupidity.

I kinda agree. The Constitution is fascinating, and it’s great for folks to read it, but no way is it an easy read for most folks. USA Today is written at a level that most folks can understand; the Constitution is not, nor was it during the eighteenth century. I really see nothing wrong with someone asking for a simple explanation of something in the Constitution.

See, here’s where we see this arrogant habit of treating guests differently. Back before pay-to-post, there wasn’t any particular difference - people could join the boards immediately. Now, there’s “guests” and “members” - and why shouldn’t a guest have the right to call out a member? Particularly when the guest had a point. Yeah, he shouldn’t have said that it GQ. But you’re a nasty little person if you think that it’s a guest’s responsibility to conduct themselves differently than a member. He has just as much business starting a pit thread as anyone else. And I don’t hold any particular animosity towards Jinx, but tiel0301 had a point.

And he didn’t shrug off a mod warning - he explained what he meant later in the thread. If he did, that’s the mods’ business, not yours. You’re straight-up junior modding at this point.

Good point. The next amendment we pass should include pie charts.

Where do I begin with this? Your ivory tower ideal of SDMB is not how I see this board at all. This is a forum for venting, against members, against Bush, against the weather, whatever. There is no rule implicit or otherwise that newbies, guests or whatever cannot or should not post here. tiel did post to the wrong forum, when reprimanded about that and given a recomendation about the appropriate forum, he went there and vented. This is nobody’s house. He did not shrug off the mod’s warning. In fact, he took it to heart. The mod did not say “oh yeah, you are a newbie/guest so shut your yap.”

Do I think jinx deserved the lashing? Probably not, but I don’t agree at all with this sort of propriatary attitude you seem to have about SDMB.

can’t you please leave Cheney out of this?

I’ll second that. If someone is acting like a jackass, it shouldn’t matter if the person who calls them on it is a guest, a member, or a charter member. A person’s join date shouldn’t be a factor in judging the content of their post.

That said, I’d say the content of the OP’s post is getting the treatment it deserves.

I haven’t read the Constitution, can I be pitted too?

I’m a real long time lurker and this is my reservation to joining. I agree with cooler heads here. Why shouldn’t we be judged on our posts and not our post count?

Tiel was judged on his post. He was judged and determined to be a dick.

How often do you walk up to a complete stranger and cuss out someone he is talking to? Even if you know Person A, it is rude, obnoxious and downright moronic to do so, without so much as a “By your leave?” Tiel offered no answer to Jinx’s question. He just popped up and started swearing at him. That marks Tiel as a fuckwad of the first order right there. There enough people in the world that we all have to deal with that have zero concept of politeness and courtesy. I see no reason why we should tolerate one more here, especially since they, so far, have offered nothing of either interest or consequence to this Board.

If you check Jinx’s OP in GQ, you will see that he had a legitimate, if unresearched question. He got his answer, especially from Ravenman, who answered some of the nuances of the question. Then** tiel** barges in and impugns Jinx’s existance. Fucktard he is, and fucktard he shall remain.

By the way: Don’t fight the hypothetical? Welcome to the Dope. May your stay here be fruitful.

Amen. I’ve regularly seen Jinx GQ questions that a quick look at a disctionary could’ve answered.

And 90% of the time he adds that inane “I’m deeply puzzled” smilie.

(Yeah, yeah. I know.)

Here’s some of the Best of Jinx:

don’t fight the hypothetical, the usual prolonged and tortuous Bad Goat/Good Goat Newbie Initiation Ritual is temporarily on hold for you until the current bristling is over and until someone finds where we stashed the firecrackers and the Mazola. But welcome!

I just flashed on Yul Brynner saying, “So let it be written. So let it be done.”

I feel I wasn’t understood. I’m sure it’s me that was unclear.

You said, "If we want to take Jinx to task, that is **ou[r] **(bolding mine) prerogitive. It is not the prerogitive of an outsider any more than it is of … <snip>". It is this I take issue with and not your chararterization of Tiel as a “fucktard” (though I’m not agreeing with you on this as a matter of course either).

It seems to me that Teil was, indeed, judged on his post. All well and good. Then you stated that was not enough, he needs to be judged yet on a stricter standard because of his status. And worse (to me) was that it was you who was setting in judgement of when an “outsider” should be allowed to critisize an ‘insider’. Right after you join? What’s the magic post number?

I maintain my position that any posting member, should be judged on his or her post and not some buddy system.

Just because Tiel got it wrong dosen’t mean the program is flawed. Baby/bathwater?

Thank you.

It seems to vary with the poster. Some of em get snooty right quick. Others never do.

Thanks for the welcome, Zoe. Like I said I’m a real long time lurker. I don’t mind my feet being held to the fire. Bring on the Mazola!

Not snooty at all. Ironically, I’m guessing you read it that way because I’m a newb. Just asking/making a point. But because of your post it seems you made my point for me.

Still, I ask you to be fair. I know I’ll screw it up before I get it right.

Well, I do have the haircut.

Welcome to the Dope, Dfth, and don’t let this little fracas spook ya. Everybody screws up something sooner or later. People really do take their tone from others. Reasonable folks are usually treated reasonably. Hazing newbies just because they’re new almost always boomerangs right back into the flamer’s teeth.

tie10301 made two missteps, neither of 'em fatal to long life and happiness on the board as long as he/she learns from ‘em. 1.) Unprovoked aggression, i.e. flaming, in a forum that doesn’t permit those kind of exchanges. 2.) He/she, as have many others, underestimated the perils of dragging another poster into the Pit for a whuppin’. Pittings can invite responses equal to their ire so a scathing denunciation can backfire on the OP.

And you’re absolutely right. The post count thing/registration date thing is hopelessly stupid.
