Actually, it pretty neatly sums up my problem with you. You spout scripture for any number of ridiculous conclusions, and by so doing prove you don’t really know much about it, either as a holy text or even as a historical text. You are pretty much the poster child for “those who say yet do not know;” the amazing thing is that everybody see this except you.
I asked:
To which JMULLANEY answered:
Translation: Yes, I have a congenital birth defect that prevents me from giving a straight answer. Instead, I indulge my delusions of Christic grandeur by posting what I fondly suppose is a parable. Not realizing that I am not the Second Coming of the Messiah, however, I fail to see that while His stories actually made sense and were responsive, mine do not and are not.
Interesting reasoning. If “A,” then “up”? If X is a value less than 12, then the black dog barks in the moonlight? Listen, forgiveness can be good and vengeance an act of hate and you can still a swine and a fool. And yes, I mean you personally.
When did he say that? There is a difference between judging a person and judging right from wrong.
So you think this is just a nonsense word? It does mean something, yes?
Um, so when he said “do not judge” what he really meant is judging is OK? As long as you have no problem facing God’s judgement, which is what he surely means. Compare the surrounding scriptures of the form “Do not do X, or bad thing Y will happen.” You are twisting the daylights out of this thing to make it mean the opposite of what it means.
You seem to not understand what the word “forgive” means either. You can’t forgive someone a debt and then expect them to pay.
Jmanuallly why do you think I was referring to you with that verse? Do you think you are a fool? I was not talking about you in paticular.
How does this quote from the bible have anything to do with your arguement? Casting pearls before swine would mean giving something too good to someone who doesent deserve it.
You should not simply forgive people because they have repented. You should forgive people if you want people to forgive you. Repentance does not erase the actions done by the person, the person should be held to his actions. If people arent held to their actions there is no justice. Being just is good, he just warns you to be just or face your own injustice or judge not at all, either is a option.
Ladies and gentlemen, unthinking literalism at it’s best! Let us now turn our attention to Matthew 26 (“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’”) and John 6:35 (“I am the bread of life.”) from which we can only assume Brother Mullaney thinks Jesus was a loaf of bread.
Well, the Lord doesn’t do these things, do He? Who wrote that, Solomon?
So this is all really about your repressed feelings of love for me. I thought so.
God makes the wisdom of the world foolish and the foolish wise. … Er, but wait, then the foolish are the wise, but then they must be the foolish, but then that would mean… Oops, my eyes have gone crossed.
You can’t be everywhere at once. You don’t have to hang out with people you don’t like. Really. You are free to go where ever you want.
Well, Jesus never studied. You ain’t got to read a book to know what love is. A crucifix’ll keep away vampires, and sometimes the Bible makes for a handy tool as well. But if people don’t believe in Love there ain’t too much you can do for them.
Well, try a bit of patience and a touch of understanding and I’m sure it will come to you. If you don’t want to understand, I’m not going to help.
Yes, Jodi, I’m more than aware that doesn’t guarantee I’m not a swine anyway. Try to keep a stiff upper lip.
You don’t know whether he’s repentant or not. All you know is that[ul][li]you’re on the jury;[]He’s pled “not guilty”, and []the prosecution has provided OVERWHELMING evidence of his guilt.[/ul]What do you, as a juror, do?[/li]
And by the way, what is all this about “shunning?” Scott Adams had a strip about everyone “shunning” Dilbert because he was in charge of the budget and was going to ask inane questions about cutting their electricity usage in half.
Other than total exile on an isolated island (e.g., San Quentin), how does “shunning” a serial murderer help in any way? The murderer doesn’t care that no one’s talking to him; in fact, it makes it easier to kill people if everyone’s ignoring him. Although if we all ignored you I think you’d be a tad put off. I’m willing to try, though, for the benefit of science.
Does your mouse not scroll up to where I cited it? Here’s the context, if you like:
Jhn 7:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
Jhn 7:22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
Jhn 7:23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
Jhn 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
He seems to be saying quite clearly: do not judge by the letter of the law; judge with righteousness, by the spirit of the law. He is referring to them judging his actions wrong, and he does not say “do not judge”, but “judge well”. Neither does Matthew 7:1 mean simply “never judge”, depite your attempt to ignore the context.
I don’t think it must mean the precise defintion you wish to assign it.
As you judge, so shall you be judged. Seems pretty clear to me. It does NOT say “if you judge at all, you will have to face judgement more terrible than your own.”
We’re not talking about forgiving of debts. We’re talking about protecting people from those who wish to harm them, and making sure that those who do harm face the consequences of it, and letting those who are thinking about doing harm know that they will have to face the consequences too.
But if you don’t want to be shunned, how can you shun another?
manhattan:
I don’t know about you, but I find this entertaining. I got over getting really upset over the bizarre workings of jmullaney’s arguments a while ago.
C’mon, manhattan! While Jodi’s got him pinned down over here, he isn’t posting non sequiturs and erroneous pseudo-factoids or inventing idiolectic definitions for common words over in GQ. You ought to be thanking these folks.
(I am starting to worry about Jodi, of course. The obvious answer to the OP was that her submitted choices are in no way mutually exclusive.)
I think the OP has been answered. (Nice pick-up, Tom!) JMULLANEY, you are an idiot, in the sense that you reach conclusions that can only be considered idiotic. Cf. such opinions as (a) monks are agents of Satan because they take vows (i.e., swear); (b) crimes should not be punished because we shouldn’t judge; and (c) no one should earn a living because God says to sell all you have and follow Him. (Sadly, I’m confident this is not an exhaustive list.) You are also a troll, in that your posting style is characterized by a willful mischaracterization of others’ points; a disingenuous asserting that you don’t understand those points; a transparent attempt to deploy red herrings to avoid answering questions; and, when the going gets really tough, selective reading to avoid even seeing the tough questions.
Your last post directed at me was devoid of a single sentence in any way deserving or even inviting a response.
I’m getting bored. It’s been, what? two days? It’s pretty apparent you’re either incapable of seeing that you’re wrong or incapable of admitting that you’re wrong, but I don’t mind plowing ahead as long as it’s kind of fun. But once it’s not, why bother?
So to Coventry with you. I hereby ask my friends and Board compatriots: If I ever again so much as respond to this, ah, person, goose me with a cattle prod and remind me I wasn’t going to play with him anymore. (But do it with Love.)
Carry on; I’ll just shut the door quietly on my way out . . . .
This is so Star Trek. With just a few pages of blather from Kirk, the computer that has been running the alien ant-farm for so long lapses into redundancy and begins belching smoke. Any moment now jmullaney’s going to hook up with some tie-dyed alien chick and the credits’ll start rolling.
I didn’t think so, Asmodean – I should have said “y’all” not “you” – sorry for the confusion.
It could mean that – only I don’t think this verse refered to the realm of things so much as the realm of wisdom. Since we are supposed to “give to those who ask and [not] turn away those who wish to borrow” (and yes, I am an unrepentant thief in this regard) if both verses refered to things they would contradict eachother.
You should also forgive people if you want God to forgive you. See, for instance, the Lord’s Prayer.
But then there would also be no mercy. Surely you don’t think God would send someone to hell though they are sorry for what they have done, right?
Justice is good, and so is mercy.
All have sinned, and all have fallen short of the glory of God. You do not want to be judged.
So you don’t think when Jesus commanded his followers not to judge, he was kidding, right? How do you feel about “Do not hate”? We already know you feel he was kidding when he said “do not take oaths”! Please provide a more detailed analysis of what commands in the Sermon on the Mount should or should not be ignored by your various semantic tricks.
Since this thread seems to be dying its well deserved death, I figured I would simply enter it into evidence for my point of view. My statements were:

I admit that while the behavior isn’t in doubt, I could perhaps be wrong in my assignment of motivations. It may very well be that jmullaney is an idiot, or simply deranged, rather than actively attempting to be a troll, (although I have seen Satan and even the extraordinarily even-handed Polycarp refer to him as such), but I don’t think so. When he’s on his meds, or just not feeling particularly trollish I guess, he tends to post like any other normal poster. But then his prescription runs out or the moon turns full or whatever, and you get things like this thread. Were-troll?
