Anyone watching this? We’re halfway through the premiere episode right now. I’ll withhold reviewing it until it’s over.
But so far it looks pretty good.
My newspaper listing describes it as “a seriocomic series”.

I liked it. The pilot is a little too early to judge how the series will be, but I’ll probably check it out again next week. The characters were likeable and believable, it’s an interesting concept, and it wasn’t saccharine and annoying (as I half expected from the descriptions I’d seen). Nice blend of the funny and the serious, I thought.
My favorite comic moment:
“It’s a tree.”
“Well, let’s see you make one.”
My favorite serious moments:
Joan, looking at a picture of Joan of Arc at the stake and panicking.
Joan and her brother, whose name I missed, in that awkward-moving-to-natural tickle-fight.
Seems like they got some decent actors, though I’m withholding judgement until I’ve seen a few more episodes.
Definitely a big step above “Touched by an Angel.”
I thought it was a decent show. I’ll defer judgment for a few weeks to see if it becomes ultra-sappy.
My favorite moment:
“If you do what I ask I won’t say anything about that promise you broke.”
“What promise?”
“The one where you said you’d behave, clean your room and even go to church if I let your brother live.”
I wasn’t expected that kind of thing at all, for some reason.
I thought it was a great pilot… just hoping the series holds out so well. I have strange views on religious topics…but I LOVED the way they described things in the show… very close to how I think. Hopefully it doesn’t end up being some cheesy version of Touched by an Angel as mentioned above… please no lighted people with accents.
Agnostic here with atheist husband and we liked it more than seems natural.
But we liked “Miss Match” as well. Anyone have predictions for these two shows?
Julie
His name is Kevin and he’s played by Jason Ritter, oldest son of John Ritter.
I really enjoyed the series premiere. I’ll have to make a point to leave Friday nights open for this.
Trivia…the girl who plays Joan was a series regular on General Hospital. Her father was one of the stars of the film West Side Story and he is her manager now…convinced her to leave the soap to get other work. Sounds like dad is no fool.
Good show…sort of a mirror reverse of Dead Like Me on Showtime.
A little slow paced, but good nonetheless. Will watch it again next week.
I liked it, thought it was nicely done, Amber Tamblyn is terrific, and I will keep watching. I haven’t said that about a lot of series premieres lately.
The show looks pretty good to me too–however, I may be a bit biased, as I’ve been a fan of Amber Tamblyn for a while. She is a good actress and it’s nice to see her doing well.
Did anyone else notice “Doctor Dave” from ER playing one of the detectives who works with her father, btw? This looks to be a much more likeable character for him.
My daughter and I will definitely be watching Joan of Arcadia.
I liked it tremendously. It was a much more serious show that I expected it to be, which was kinda nice. I feared it would be mostly “fluff”. I’m just glad there’s finally going to be something decent to watch on Friday nights.
My favorite moment? When Joan said “God is snippy?”
I liked it. It’s on my list of “must see tv shows”.
I felt more “eh” than anything else. The characters felt pretty stock, and mom’s theological crisis was textbook. Interesting premise, and I’ll watch another episode or two to see if it grows, but if it stays at the level of the premiere I’ll give it a pass.
It was pretty good. I’ll have to watch some more episodes to see what the show actually turns out to be about, though. (Is it about her everyday life in high school? Her life as religious messiah? A crime show with God as Sherlock Holmes and her as Dr. Watson?)
I hated hated hated the geek brother character, though. Technobabble and religiobabble combined make a frightening combination. It’s as if Geordi LeForge became a born again missionary.
Hi there, tarragon…Seems we have another TV show in common?
(Speaking of which, we’re just getting piled on in the Other TV Show Thread, but oh well. And I’m sticking with you in our assessment of The Hours. 'Cause we both know how right we are…Right? )
Hijack ends here.

That’s pretty close to my own take. I really like the premise of the show. It pretty much reflects my own worldview.
But the writing will be critical here. There are some deep philosophical issues in practically every aspect of this concept. Last night, for example, the stock crisis you mentioned was answered in a stock manner — the priest had no clue as to why God “lets people suffer”. And I wondered whether that was the ignorance of the character qua priest or the ignorance of the writer qua philosopher.
We’ll see, I reckon. I hope it turns out to be worthwhile.
I really enjoyed it. I also liked the “God is snippy” line. That made me giggle. Also the “I don’t sell ‘Harry Potter’ anything” line.
I loved the look on her face when the cafeteria lady asked her why she didn’t get the job.
Who played the Bookstore Guy? He looked familiar.
My only quibble was when the Bookstore Guy left her alone in the store. Come on, would you leave your store in the hands of a 17-year-old that you just met? I don’t think so.
Forgot to tape it but will definitely catch it next week. Anyone want to give some basic exposition so I know who’s what next time?
Ooops. I meant an UNOFFICIAL fan site.
www.televisionwithoutpity.com should have a recap of it. Might be kind of snarky.
