British actress Joanna Lumley helped fight for the rights of Nepal’s Gurkha veterans to reside in Britain, and her efforts have been credited with influencing a favorable outcome. Story on the eventual Gurkha settlement here.
She’s in Nepal this week and is being swamped with admirers hailing her as a hero. Placards are proclaiming her to be the “Goddess Joanna.” Stories on this here and here.
Not bad. Bravo, Joanna.
I’ve considered Joanna Lumley to be a goddess since The New Avengers. She could run full speed while wearing stiletto heels!
It’s also nice whenever a celebrity uses their celebrity to help good causes. I know some celebs get obnoxious about this but I don’t care. If I had celebrity I’d use it for a good cause every chance I got.
BBC TV was just saying she met with the president and prime minister today and will head to Pokhara. That’s a nice little town, very lovely lakeside area. The last time I spoke with my father before he died in Texas was by phone from Pokhara. (He wasn’t even sick then. Little did I know something sudden was soon to happen.)
And now they’ve just said people wil be walking for days just to see her in Pokhara. For days. I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to have people want to walk for days just to gaze upon me.
Great Joanna quote from last year, when she turned 61 and did the obligatory Aging Sexbomb interview.
“If you always try to be kind, you’ll look like the most beautiful person on Earth - and men will just fall at your feet.”
Babe, you’re still a knockout.
They seem to be doing it quite literally for her right now in Nepal.
We gotta go to the crappy country where I’m a hero!
Better than that… she’s absolutely fabulous!
