Job-hunting: how 'enthusiastic' should I be?

So I’m job-hunting after 8 years, and I’ve spotted a job that would be perfect for me which is very nearby, as is the recruitment agent. So I’ve emailed the agent and will follow up by phone in the morning - about 09:30 to give him time to go through his emails. Now, I’m not currently working so I can interview immediately. I expect that the agent will want to see me, so I’m expecting to say, “I can be with you in 30 mins”, but how hard should I push for a quick interview with the actual client? Is it bad form to have the attitude of ‘carpe diem’?

And wish me luck!

Enthusiasm is good, but don’t press to the extent you expect them to rearrange their schedule for you. Something along the lines of “I’m looking forward to the interview, when can we schedule it?” would be good, assuming they’ve expressed an interest in interviewing you.

“I can be with you in 30 minutes” comes across as desperation, not enthusiasm. Good luck!

That is for the agent, not the client, and recognition of his proximity.

Well, I spoke to the agent and he hadn’t received my CV! It arrived as we were speaking. We’ll see how things turn out.

It still says desperation, to me.

I think it’s ok to be quite eager with the recruitment agency, they are looking to get someone placed with their client, the one **Quartz ** will actually interview with later. That interview is the one she should play a little cooler, IMHO.

Well yeah, but 30 minutes? If I heard that (granted, I live in a large Metro area), I’d hear, “I’m willing to move heaven and earth to get to you asap!” Hearing something like, “Well I’m free this morning!” or “this afternoon” wouldn’t be a problem. But it’s the 30 minutes that would weird me out.

Yes, I agree, it sounds a trifle creepy. “I’m very enthusiastic, and would love to talk to you ASAP” is fine – but let the person pick a time.

Well, I dialled it down; I’ll email him tomorrow afternoon to see if there’s any progress.

Try the Glengarry Glen Ross approach. Offer him two times–“I’m eager to discuss the position with you. Which would work better for you, two o’clock this afternoon or ten o’clock tomorrow morning?”

When you offer people two times, they’re more likely to pick one rather than just saying, “I can’t do it then, let me get back to you.” I’ve tried this for scheduling meetings at work and it actually works.

BE SUPER DUPER ENTHUSIASTIC!!!

You sit the fuck down! Interviews are for CLOSERS!*
