Joe Biden 2020!

Joe Biden seems the obvious choice in 2020. He wanted to run this year. He’s always wanted to be President. But between Clinton’s dominating lead in fundraising and endorsements and the death of his son, it just wasn’t meant to be.

But fast forward to 2020. Sure, Biden’s old, but Trump will be old as well. And who has more working class cred than Biden? Biden also has the competence card to play if Trump proves to be as unfit as expected. Finally, Biden is essentially scandal free despite 40 years in public service. He had the plagiarism thing and that’s long behind him. eight years as VP, very few people have anything bad to say about him. Even his gaffes are more adorable than damaging.

I won’t predict Biden will be President, or even that he will run, but fate has just opened up a pretty wide door for him if he wants to walk through it.

No. No one is immune from history, whether that is fair or not. Biden’s baggage is Hillary, again whether that is fair or not. The next Democtratic contender needs to have clear historical air.

It’s far too early to tell what will work next cycle.

Either we’re in the midst of a populist war and have to combat authoritarian populism with progressive populism.

Or maybe we’re going to be stuck in an “outsider” rut still and need to run some untested firebrand.

Or maybe people will be incredibly unhappy with Trump and crave the stability of a tested establishment candidate.

We have no way of predicting how people will be feeling yet.

The Scranton area (both literally, and as an archetype), one might argue, cost Hillary this election more than any other identifiable place. For that reason alone, I suppose Joe should be seriously considered.

But I’m exhausted. I need to rest for a long time. This is the first and last moment, for a long while to come, I will think about any future election.

What gave you that idea? He’s always maintained that he does not want to run, and does not want to be President, in every interview I have seen.

It’s true that you can’t know in advance what the public will want, and new blood will be preferable to Biden, despite his strengths. But Democrats shouldn’t emulate the Republicans or do Obama 2.0. They should get someone who is fresh and yet has real accomplishments.
