Joe Clark, former Conservative Prime Minister of Canada and current leader of the Conservative party, will be the grand marshall of the Gay Pride Parade in Calgary Centre, his riding, this weekend.
The un-Rev. Mr. Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, plans to come and picket with his usual gang of homophobes.
Hee Hee! Parochial American me, I saw the thread and thought you were referring to the American high-school principal featured in the movie Lean on Me.
[megaphone]All right, you gay people. I want to see that leather shine! You! What are you doing? Get back in line and start kissing that guy! What do you think this is, the Shriners? We’re competing with New York and San Francisco here, for Ghod’s sakes. Do you think their gay pride parades have people marching out of order? I wanna see some pride![/megaphone]
Ya know, I have real issues with the Baptist church, having been raised in one for 18 years. But Phelps makes Southern Baptists look like Unitarians in comparison.
I can’t believe someone hasn’t arranged a meeting between him and the God he professes to serve yet.
You know what I think would be best? If Phelps were to suffer little petty annoyances, every day…just little things, but constant and frequent. Such as:
-His underwear simultaneaously (sp?) riding up his arse and sliding down his hips
-his socks always sliding down below his ankles
-the bottoms of his feet itching whenever he wears shoes, in a place he can’t take them off and scratch
-always getting stuff caught in his teeth
-flatulence in embarassing situations
-always falling asleep in strange positions, so he wakes up achy and sore
-fluid in his ears
-getting annoying songs stuck in his head
I can only wonder what Phelps doesn’t get outraged at. The man really needs to take a day off.**
Psssssst!!! Andygirl!! Didn’t you get the latest update to the GAY AGENDA? We’re trying to take Phelps out by giving him a heart attack or stroke. The guy’s over 70 and due to kick the bucket soon. With all that yelling and screaming he does, he’s sure to blow an artery like a Firestone tire real soon now!
Arden Ranger, I don’t know if you meant to say Fred is a Southern Baptist, but in case there was any misunderstanding he is not. He used to identify with a grouping called Primitive Baptists, but in the Topeka phone book his Westboro Baptist Church is now listed simply with Churches-Baptist and not under any of the different sub groupings.
In case anyone has an upset stomach and needs to hurl, and doesn’t have any ipecac on hand, here is ol’ Phreds announcement about going to Canada again, it’s a listing of currents fliers, just click on the one for June 10th: http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/pickets.html
It’s hard to live in Topeka as I do because we get to see more than our share of this creep. Not a very Christian attitude on my part, and I do try not to hate, but it is so hard. My church congregation(Grace Episcopal Cathedral) has him included in the prayer list each week, as some of his followers are often informal greeters each Sunday on the other side of the street. I keep the following item bookmarked on my computer for whenever I get too upset, and have to remind myself that even Fred is a child of God:
Actually, my favorite story about Phred is one matt_mcl told in another thread, about the Mountie showing the Phelps group how to safely burn a Canadian flag, so that they wouldn’t get hurt and have to be treated in a Canadian hospital with Canadian money.
I’m thinkin’ he’s going for the gay vote. And good for him! Stockwell (Doris) Day is finally showing what a fuck-up he is, and the C.R.A.P party won’t be opposition…
Ginger, I’d heard that Joe’s victory in Calgary Centre last fall was due in part to concerted support from the gay community, who thought he was a better type of conservative to elect than the Alliance kind - living near Calgary, have you heard anything about this?
At any rate, IMHO, this episode illustrates the difference between the Progressive Conservatives and the Alliance. It also makes me wonder about those “unite the right” people who talk as if it’s all just a question of party structure/personalities and so on. There are some significant philiosophical differences on public policy as well.
Good lord, no! I know he’s not affiliated with any sub-group under the Baptist banner. I’ve done quite a lot of reasearch on the twit for various papers and presentations on hate groups/hate crimes for school.
I was raised in the Southern Baptist tradition and consider them somewhat extreme. Fred is so extreme he makes SB look like Unitarians-who are not extreme.
Joe Clark is the MP for my riding (I live in Calgary Centre), and he has made me proud a few times since he took his seat. He has also gone on record saying that he is not planning to gorge himself at the public trough like the other MP’s, and especially the Prime Minister - Mr. 42% wage increase, himself. Dare I say it - could he possibly be a politician with integrity?
I’ve only been back here a little while. I am proud of Joe, always have been, even though he’s kind of a numpty. He’s a stand-up kind of guy. The media here has always been to hard on him, calling him “Joe Who?” due to his short term in office as our Prime Minister.
Hell yeah, I’d vote for him. I’m a closet PC[sub]please please don’t tell anyone![/sub]
I would ALSO like to put forth the notion, once again, that we have a referendum to have Stockwell Day change his name to Doris. Dammit. [emphatic foot stomping]
I thought Brian Mulroney was a total asshole (Happy Obvious Day!), and I think it’s kind of creepy how he keeps endorsing Joe’s leadership. But I like Joe. He’s statesmanlike and honest. He doesn’t make me see red the way Stock and Jean do.
A lot of the PC’s I know are really nice, too. I debated with one during the election who particularly impressed me (she was 19 too, and she and I ganged up on the Liberal and CCRAP guys in the debate because they were lying schmoes.) I was rooting for her; she had a serious chance in the riding she was in. (The NDP was running a parachute candidate in that riding.) Too bad she lost. She was shibby.
labradorian, there isn’t an “official” Baptist church as such. There are a number of different denominations of Baptists, as there are with other Protestant churches, but as I understand it Baptists give less power as such to centralized governing, and are more congregationally oriented.
Northern Piper, thanks for the Golbe and Mail Reference. I think I will write a letter to the editor of the Topeka Capital-Journal about this, and to have such a cite will help. I’ve had letters published a number of times, and this will show that the ABC is not as courageous as it says it is. Many’s the time Pfred says he regrets not having been in jail, so why did his clan pass up this opportunity?
