I know I’m the king of dead end posts but I was chagrined when I got no replies to my invite to come to the Joe Jackson concert tonight in Phoenix. No replies to the thread but Strainger did email me to let me know he wasn’t a fan. Joe has really dropped out of the mainsteam but that’s part of what I like about him. Anyway, he’s in Phoenix tonight in support of his new album, Night and Day II.
Damn, Padeye, if I were in Phoenix, I’d go. I love Joe Jackson, and actually have purchased albums of his other than “Night and Day.” Didn’t see your first post about this. Perhaps you’re the king of invisible posts?
Just curious, is his new album good? I absolutely wore out my tapes of Joe Jackson Live 82-86 (I think those were the dates). I then bought it on CD and they were stolen and I’ve yet to find them.
Unfortunately, I’m in Dallas and I doubt I could make Phoenix by showtime.
Maybe it’s just bad timing, those dead end posts are usually made late afternoon. I wish you had seen the post, he was in Denver Saturday night
BTW apologies over the pictures. My evil ISP deleted my accounts and webspace but didn’t restore them.
I saw Joe last week when he was in Chicago, Padeye. It was fucking great. Keep your eye out for a bossa nova cover of Steely Dan’s Reeling In The Years. Really amazing show in general. I went by myself, too. Couldn’t find anyone that wanted my extra ticket. Not our problem most people have no taste in music.
I love Joe Jackson’s music, second only to Billy Joel. I’ve made it my next life’s goal to see JJ live (for the first time!) on the second leg of his current tour. (I missed the Chicago date earlier this month. Damn!) His live albums are awesome – the concerts must rock! Mr. Scarlett and I have decided to combine a spring mini-vacation with seeing JJ – we’ll just pick a city on the tour that appeals to us, and fly out for a few days. We’ll be able to save up some cash by then, too.
Loved Summer in the City – the new version of “Hometown,” a song I hadn’t really clicked with before, made me cry.
Believe me, Padeye, with the blizzard conditions and my current workload, I’d love to be in Phoenix tonight! Have a good time.
Yeah, and the real bitch is that there’s no Dallas date on the tour… at least not yet. Hell, there’s no Texas tour date. grumble Night & Day II is definitely on my Xmas list… I’ve heard a few excerpts from it and I’m intrigued.
[hijack]So Tommy, you should come to one of the DFW DopeFests sometime. We’re a sublimely wacky bunch, and we get together about once a month or so. If you’re REALLY lucky I might even cook dinner. completely humble grin[/hijack]
Does it get any sweeter than that? Steely Dan is my all time favorite group. I never got to see Steely Dan back in the seventies when they made it to Phoenix but made it both times they were here after Becker and Fagen reunited. Aweseome shows and they recorded cuts for the live album from each of the Phoenix shows. I’m also fortunate to have a GF with good and eclectic taste in music. I was afraid she’d ask who JJ was but gave me a pleasant surprise when she said she wanted to go.
I intentinally avoided buying the new album so I could hear the songs first live. Not difficult as I only learned about the show and new album barely more than a week ago. I’m sure I can buy one at the show and with luck it will be possible to get one autographed.
Padeye, I’m sorry I can’t make it to Phoenix to see JJ (being snowed in and all ;)), but I’ll be seeing him next Monday here in Toronto. Have a great time this evening and don’t forget to tell us how the concert was. I didn’t see the original thread, otherwise I would have posted to it, if only to say that I’m a fellow fan.
I bought his latest CD Saturday and I quite enjoy it.
My original thread was only slightly misleadingly titled I’m Beat Crazy. This has wholly restored my faith in the musical taste of SDMB cool people.
I thought this was gonna be a thread about Shoeless Joe Jackson, banned from Major League Baseball for his involvement in the 1919 World’s Series betting scandal.
damn.
Oops, forgot – has anybody read JJ’s memoir, A Cure for Gravity? Excellent stuff. I read it last year and am giving it to a friend for Christmas. I highly recommend it for JJ fans!

This is kind of weird, but I was introduced to the music of Joe Jackson by, of all people, Anthrax, who covered his song “Got the Time” on their album Persistence of Time. I’m a Joe Jackson fan. It’s too bad his music doesn’t get more exposure.
Aww man, I thought you were talking about Shoeloess Joe Jackson, the great first baseman for the Chicago White Sox, and whether he deserved to be kicked out of the game for double-crossing the bettors and having a great World Series in 1919, even if his teammates tanked it.
Jackson was the leftfielder.
Chick Gandil (one of the ringleaders of the Black Sox, and someone who DID throw games) was the first baseman.
I think that album must have some sort of curse on it. I have that CD set too, and there’s a big honking scratch on it right in the middle of “Sunday Papers”. I’m usually real careful with my CD’s, so the scratch must have appeared on its own mystical accord.
One other think I’d like to point out about Mssr. Jackson . . . His birth day is August 11. Guess whose else?
Me, ya mook.
Joe’s live show was terrific. Most of the songs were from the original Night and Day and the recent followup but he fit in plenty of crowd pleasers from Look Sharp, Laughter and Lust, Body and Soul and the sadly out of print Big World and Blaze of Glory. Joe’s band was outstanding, especially the volcals by violinist/pianist Allison Cornell. She has a very strong voice that reminded me just a little bit of Ellen Foley who Joe has cut some tracks with.
During the first set before the break Joe didn’t speak a word to the audience aside from singing until they were done. When he came back he started the second set with four songs on solo piano and proved to be a lot more friendly and gregarious. He did a terrific version of Breaking us in Two and Duke Ellington’s signature Satin Doll.
Joe did his best to play the whole range of his music from his punk days on but left us hungry for more. The only way the show could have been better would be if it was three hours longer.
I love Joe Jackson - a class act all the way.
His Jumpin’ Jive album predated the whole swing resurgence thing by what? a decade?
The man’s a genius.
ISTR hearing or reading that he batted well in the Series but made a greater than normal number of fielding errors. Would he have taken the money if he would have known how things would turn out? Certainly not. Did he not realize the possible consequences? Possibly, but I seriously doubt that he thought it honest. Did he take the money? Yes, by his own admission. Personally, I have mixed feelings.
[hijack] Chef, if you see this, I’ve thought about introducing myself in one of the “DFW Dopefest” threads, but just wanted to be around a bit more so people would somewhat recognize the name. I figured I should wait until I got to at least 100 posts. Well, I’ll keep an eye out for the next time y’all are planning a dopefest and I’ll speak up when you are. Thanks for the invite. [/hijack]
By the way, how was the Joe Jackson show in Phoenix?
