Are there any Joe Meek fans out there in Dopeland?
The (British) National Film Theatre had organised a Joe Meek night on Friday 9th February to celebrate (if that’s the right word) the 40th anniversary of the great man’s death - by his own hand - in 1967. It included a showing of the 1963 classic film “Live It Up”, featuring tunes by Joe Meek, followed by a screening of the 1991 BBC documentary “The Strange Story of Joe Meek”. Clem Cattini would have done an introduction.
But there was a power failure which meant that all tonight’s screenings were cancelled.
Bugger!
Those who are not familiar with Joe Meek’s work will doubtless be aware of the 1962 tune “Telstar” by the Tornados, which was the first British-produced record to reach number 1 in the USA.
