John Constantine series on NBC, Fall 2014??!!

I only know about this because of an preview on YouTube. They made a serious effort to make John look like comic-book John. The preview shows his name printed but, iirc, doesn’t say it aloud, so I don’t know yet if he’s Constan-Teen or Constan-Tine in this.

HAHAHAHHA! I always assumed it was “-teen.” I do remember, in one Swamp Thing story, he’s talking to Chester, one of Abby’s friends. Chester says, “Hey, I know who you are! You’re that Constan-teen fella!” John replies, “Tine. Constan-Tine.”

I’m pretty sure Chester said “-teen” because he heard Abby and ST say it that way when they were bitching about John. Thus, John would have used “-teen” when he first made himself known to them. I wouldn’t put it past him to use both pronunciations to beguile his associates. They’re eventually going to be angry with him about something, and the more he confuses them, the more he weakens their resolve.

This could be the best news I’d heard all day, IF:

[li]He smokes unapologetically.[/li][li]He’s English - I’ll accept not being from Liverpool, but at least make him come from the right fucking country.[/li][li]He uses cons more than magic. Anything about JC should not be a special effects extravaganza.[/li][li]it’s pronounced “Contantine” (rhymes with wine.)[/li][/ul]
But it’ll probably be more like the Keanu movie.

Just watched it. I am cautiously optimistic.

I believe the smoking thing is under debate right now. The writers want it, but I thInk NBC is concerned. TV-MA is automatic if smoking is prominent, I think.

Saw this rolled out at the NBC Upfront yesterday and it looks pretty promising.

I’m going to end up wishing it was on HBO the whole time.

Exactly my reaction. I don’t trust NBC’s ability to pull this off properly. I like that they are taking a chance on the material, but I really wish it was a cable network investing in it instead.

So, ushers are going to come to everybody’s house and make sure kids don’t watch?

Actually, Hannibal and The Blacklist have cable-equivalent CGI gore. They decided violence gets them better ratings, so they have some pretty graphic shit. I think they’ll do Constantine good.

Very much this. One thing I’ve always liked about Constantine is how often he uses bluff, misdirection, and fear to get what he wants rather than magic. And even his magic tends to be a bit casual and haphazard - IIRC, he’s summoned demons who have then commented on the lack of rigor/poor quality of his ritual.

I did enjoy Constantine the movie - don’t judge me. However, this upcoming TV adaptation looks like it may be more faithful to the original material.

Could be cool!

There’s also a brief clip from the pilotonline. Bad news: He pronounces it ‘-teen’.

Based on the preview, it seems likely to be TV-MA even without smoking. Will it really be TV-14 without the smoking?

Honestly, I would have enjoyed the movie more, had they named Keanu’s character something else. As it was, I kept thinking, that’s not JC.

I half agree with that. Constantine himself shouldn’t be shooting lightning bolts out of his ass, but he’s pretty regularly around people (or worse) who do. Lots of angels, abominations, elementals, and demons in Constantine’s world, enough to more than justify a heavy fx budget. But yeah, Constantine himself should get by on his wits and his ability to bullshit.

Kind of like the Doctor, except everyone thinks he’s a dick.

Your argument has merit. I’ll agree.

There were three more promising things in the trailer.

Ravenscar
Astrid (or Astra - I can’t remember her name.)
“Not my problem… (sigh) Bullocks.”

One thing I’m hoping for is that they’ll keep John’s bisexuality.

(Perhaps bring in Nick Necro to bother him for a while.)

I’m not holding my breath, but I’m hoping.

In today’s climate, there’s probably a better chance of him being bi than him being a smoker.

Which is kind of awesome, if you think about it.

This is a very common guilty admission, actually. A lot of people seem to hate that the movie strayed so far from the source material, but don’t actually hate the movie on its own terms, but hate that they don’t hate the movie like they’re supposed to.
