I’ve heard of states where the state party organization draws up a shortlist of a half-dozen candidates or so, and the governor must pick one of those. I don’t know if that’s how Arizona does it, though.

Here’s the relevant part of the actual law:

C. For a vacancy in the office of United States senator, the governor shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy. That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office. If the person vacating the office changed political party affiliations after taking office, the person who is appointed to fill the vacancy shall be of the same political party that the vacating officeholder was when the vacating officeholder was elected or appointed to that office.

No shortlist, no qualifications beyond “shall be of the same political party”.

As with most States the Governor will appoint a replacement until the next election in 2018. Arizona is unique as far as I can tell in that state law requires the new appointee to be of the same political party as the departing Senator.

According to here, Arizona is in short company, but not unique. Hawaii, North Carolina, Utah and Wyoming also have the same rule.

There is no “senate health plan.” The ACA contained a clause that all members of Congress and most staffers can only sign up for health care on the DC exchange. If they sign up for a gold level plan, the government pays 72% of their premiums. In other words, they sign up for the same health care that is available to any resident of DC.

So I assume most of them don’t qualify for the subsidies given to low-income people on exchange plans… Hmmm… How much have premiums gone up in DC?
