I suspect this boosts President Trump’s chances of getting Kennedy’s replacement through the Senate.
The bigger issue is Republican Susan Collins refusal to vote for any candidate hostile to Roe vs Wade.
“Confirming a (SCOTUS) replacement before the election is considered in the interest of the national Republican party, so that it doesn’t become an issue for Dems to run on in every race,”
Uh, confirming what will be a Torquemada light judge before the election does not lead that item to be forgotten when the election comes. Seems to be the same mentality as the politicians had about the court giving the Dred Scott decision. It is like President Buchanan thinking that ‘now that will settle the issue of slavery once and for all’… It did not work as he and others wanted.
Yes, that’s an issue, but up until now, McConnel has faced that issue as well as a Senator McCain that was too ill to vote. Now they’ll be able to strike that latter issue from their list of concerns.
What’s the practice in Arizona with replacing Senators?
God speed, sir.
I’ve read that since he made it past some June deadline the governor can pick his replacement. I’m admittedly fuzzy on the details.
McCain is a true Republican to the end.
Had he resigned prior to May 30th, his seat would have gone to election.
Since he resigned post May 30th, his seat will be replaced by a gubernatorial appointment – a Republican appointing another Republican.

No one else seems to be carrying this news. Not on AP or Google.
Why would a random local pennysaver in California be the only outlet with this news?
Only one who says so explicitly. She’s expressed a willingness to participate in the kabuki dance where the nominee pretends to have never heard of the issue.
Take heart, they might be wrong. I have no idea how they developed their source.
We could call it the Ginsburg Standard.
Not so big, I don’t think. She voted to confirm Gorsuch and she voted for the nuclear option to allow Republicans to confirm him with a simple majority. SCOUTS nominees are well aware of the fact that they have to non-answer the question about Roe.
Didn’t Obama, who has beenout of the limelight since he left, say elections have consequences?
Congress is broken. Getting a new Supreme court justice approved might come down to which party has the majority inthe Senatethese days.
If this is the new normal, you can expect either party to force a vote before elections. Get used to it. I do not expect more than 3 democratic senators to vote for whomever Trump nominates.
The roof will be raised once Ginsberg ( 86 in August ) or Breyer ( 80 this summer ) vacate their spot, either through natural cases or retirement.
Longtime McCain aide Mark Salter was on TV this weekend and didn’t mention any resignation date.
Very good. And who broke it?
… and is keeping it broken?
Pretty sure that was Justice Garland.
I blame Harry Reid.
Based on what - his demand that Obama be a one-term President?
I think you need to go back to Gingrich for the origins, and the endless Get Bill Clinton For Something Hearings for it to come into full flower.
