I liked the first two movies, so I’ll probably go see this one. I’m fairly sure it will be more of the same we got in JW2, though ramped up. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I’ll watch it. The first was a great action movie. Second was fine, and I think the drop in quality was more about it being less fresh than anything else. I expect this one to be more fairly mindless fun.
Also looking forward to “The Continental” TV series. Is that still happening? When I watched the first movie I remember thinking the hotel and the whole concept of an organized world of professional assassins could make for an interesting TV series.
I saw it on Saturday and enjoyed it. It requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, because this ridiculously advanced (but with some retro technology) criminal underground appears to exist alongside mainstream society without widespread panic or alarm. I did like the set design and locations (NY Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, the (fictional) New York Continental Hotel, etc.) And I didn’t understand until I saw the film what the subtitle of Parabellum meant, but it’s explained in the film
Finally did you notice the suggested tie-in to another action film?
The “ballet school” where John Wick met The Director, played by Anjelica Huston, might be the place where the lead character of Atomic Blonde was trained.
some reviews are going on about the “old school” tech. for me that is the most logical part of the movies.
it keeps everything tamper proof and private. you can’t tap into a typewriter, and I would think trying to breaking into the file room to switch out a file would be incredibly stupid.
the office dress code is what I could “go on about”.
Watching a guy shoot people in the head every 5 seconds gets… boring. IMO the movie peaked about 15 minutes in after the stable scene. I have seen all of them up to this point, but I think I’m done.
yes! never thought I’d say “too much action”, but they could have shaved 20 minutes off the final fight scene and had a better end product- when the guys in the fight take time to rest, bad sign. But the knife fight and the horse chase were great. And Keanu rules of course, but no way on earth any mortal survives that roof drop, let alone is cracking jokes minutes later.
I still love the first John Wick with all my heart. It’s such a well-choreographed dance of mayhem and violence, and there’s just enough of the stuff underneath (The Continental, the other assassins, etc.) to add texture to the movie without having to fully flesh it out.
#2, for me, got too deep into the underlying mythos. I had to suspend my disbelief enough in the first one (and I was happy to do so); the second required too much of that for me. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much.
I saw #3 yesterday, and I guess #2 inoculated me somewhat, because I actually enjoyed it more than 2. Still nowhere near as much as the original, but I had an easier time just diving into their world. Having said that, I experienced the film very differently than the other two. For me, there was less tension, and I spent more time just admiring Wick’s creativity in killing people. As soon as he went into the stable it was obvious that he would be using horses as weapons, and he didn’t disappoint. I’m not sure that this was the desired response, but I actually laughed out loud in a couple of spots.
Something about the Morocco sequence felt… wasted? A missed opportunity? Makes me wonder what deleted scenes will be on the DVD. Something just didn’t really work about that for me.
Halle Berry was fine, but I wonder why she was in this - is she a fan? Felt like that character could have been played by any number of lower-profile, possibly better, actors.
I loved her dogs. It made me realize that we haven’t had a good canine action star since Rin Tin Tin. I enjoyed the hell out of their every moment on screen.
