Johnny Cash at San Quentin supporting acts

A damn fine album, with some damn fine music by Cash.

I’ve listened to it I don’t know how many times, and have just recently had my attention caught by Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers.

What else should I try by them?

For the Statlers you need to start with their first album, Flowers on the Wall, if only because it also has their biggest hit. Then I’d jump to Pardners in Rhyme, recorded after Jimmy Fortune took over singing tenor.

After that, I’d recommend one of their gospel albums, but if you want to skip that, and when you think you’re ready, dip into* Country Music Then and Now*, which includes one of their most poignant songs, and more importantly, the amazing world of Lester “Road Hog” Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys.

Flowers on the Wall is a superb song, and is what caught my attention.

I’ll be honest, while I’m interested in the Statler Brothers, gospel is not going to get me going.

You might enjoy this here. I’m surprised it’s rating is so low, because I really liked it as a life-long Johnny Cash fan, but there it is.

Very interesting, never heard of that. Here is “part 1” of that album on YouTube.

Yes! I actually bought it back in the day at a Johnny Cash concert!
