Johnny Depp

A Johnny Depp movie I’ve never seen discussed here on these boards is Dead Man. Anybody see this one? It’s a strange, dreamlike western about a wounded, misplaced accountant from the east coast meeting up with an Indian named Nobody, and how they make a spiritual journey to the Pacific Northwest. Transvestite drifters and cannibalistic bounty hunters make appearances. It’s peppered with quirky actors and sports a beautiful and strange guitar score by Neil Young. As usual, JD’s performance kicks butt. I’d like to see this one again, particularly because I missed the first fifteen minutes or so. Gotta rent it!

Dead Man is beautifully shot in black and white by Robby Muller and directed by Jim Jarmusch. Also, the soundtrack by Neil Young is terrific–the only thing he’s ever done that I liked, but I loved it. Depp is very understated in the role, but it’s an interesting movie overall.

Great Depp movies (in no specific order):

Pirates of the Caribbean
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
Edward Scissorhands
Ed Wood
Nick Of Time (AWESOME action movie where Depp is the hero and Christopher Walken is the villain; told in “real time” long before 24 came out with the same concept)
Once Upon a Time In Mexico (he’s the only good thing about the movie, but he is so awesome in it that he makes up for every other flaw)
Donnie Brasco
From Hell (good movie, even if it deviates in major ways from the comic book source material)
Sleepy Hollow
Cry Baby
The Ninth Gate
Platoon
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
Dead Man

Ones I haven’t seen:

Finding Neverland
Secret Window
The Astronaut’s Wife
Don Juan DeMarco
Benny and Joon

Have I left out any key Depp movies? Do I need to rush out and see any of those?

sounds like a typical JD movie!!! i want to see it. that and ed wood. i’ve never seen that either.

i would say definitely see secret window. weird, but awesome, and his hair is so hot in it lol. and draelin has told me about a great scene in astronaut’s wife. i haven’t see AW but i’m wanting to

There’s at least three in there I haven’t seen … I might be making a trip to the video store. Nick of Time and The Ninth Gate, I think. Saw one and don’t remember it, the other slipped past me. Sleepygirl, we’re havin’ another movie night!

Finding Neverland–I adored it. Most everyone I know loved it. Those who didn’t love it hated it. You get the feeling that there are aspects of some of the inter-character relationships that could have been better explored, but the importance is really on the creation of Peter Pan.

The Astronaut’s Wife–I saw this in the theater, and I only have very vague recollections. Looking back, I remember three things. 1. Totally hot southern accent. 2. Totally hot scene with Charlize Theron pinned up against a wall. 3. It would have been a better movie if it hadn’t been released as The Devil’s Advocate first.

Don Juan DeMarco–I also barely remember it. I think I would greatly benefit from a second viewing, though.

Benny and Joon–Wonderful. Touching and funny look at family, relationships, and the quirks of life. I thought it handled the subject matter very well (Mary Stuart Masterson was brilliant. Best line of the movie: “Don’t underestimate the mentally ill, Benjamin, we can count.”), and Johnny himself has an adorable Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton character that makes the whole movie worth it.

I love Dead Man. I saw it on IFC one day, and they have the tendency to replay movies several times in a two-week span, and I pretty much watched it every single time it was on. I don’t even know why I love it so much, but it still ranks right up there with my favorite movies of all time.

“Fuck me? Fuck you!” Heh.

For some reason, I don’t think Depp was that hot when he was young. I mean, he had a nice, cute face, but I don’t think he was sex on a stick until…um…maybe after Legend of Sleepy Hollow? I’m not quite sure when he went from “Eh, ok” for me to “OMG HE IS SO FREAKING HAWT!!!” I know it wasn’t PoTC.

Incidently, does anybody else get annoyed with the campaign for the Finding Neverland DvD that includes this stellar line: “And PoTC’s Johnny Depp.” Like that’s the only freaking movie he’s done.

Great Googly-moogly! You haven’t seen the Ninth Gate??

I own a copy of that little gem.

Yea yea, I think our Depp fangirls will definitely like Ninth Gate. Some sexy stuff in there too, as I recall. And Nick of Time is just RAD.

I’m a dude and as straight as they come, but even I’ll admit Depp is a good-looking guy. He gets bonus cool points for playing in a band and reading comic books. He’s my favorite actor, and probably the best of his generation (although Edward Norton is damn good too, and just as versatile).

edward norton does have that silent cool going on. well since fight club anyway. how great would it have been if JD was in that one?

coming soon… the libertine, the corpse bride, and charlie and the chocolate factory (which i just saw a pic for and he looks weird)

Never seen Ed Wood! That’s my (current) favorite role of JD’s. And as good as JD was in this film, Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi was even better. Gotta love the Tim Burton direction and the Howard Shore score, too.

So good, I believe he won an Oscar for it. And yes, it’s such a great movie, just weird from beginning to end in a way that makes you feel you’re actually looking in on this guy’s life. What makes it so perfect is that it looks like a movie Ed Wood might have made.

ok i just watched the chocolate factory trailer, and i must say i’m quite disappointed. it seemed really out there (not that i’m surprised, tim burton and all) but JD kind of looks, well girly. and the teeth are just scary. i read somewhere that he based the role of willy wonka on marilyn manson. interesting. i hope it’s just a sucky trailer.

Oh, we’ll be there on opening night and you know it.

yeah i know  but still he looks really freaky.

The Onion has an amusing article this week, an “interview” with Mr. Depp.

Eek. I just read it, and I know it’s the Onion and satirical, but 21 Jump Street? Yuck.
