Johnny Manziel career predictions

I’ve been on the road traveling, so I assume Houston picked him up first round, in which case I trust he will continue to advance his impressive career, fill a much needed QB leadership position and help them into the playoffs this year. Wait, he didn’t? He’s much too small for the NFL, has a shitty attitude and will wash out as King Joffery Tebow II in two seasons. Screw you, Johnny Ballsack! Screw you!

I think he’s going to have a big giant target on his head from day one if for no reason other than having the nickname “Jonnny Football” before you’ve even played a single snap in the NFL isn’t going to go over well.

Why don’t we think that he’ll have at least Cam Newton’s initial pro career? Looking at their college football stats (Newton’s; Manziel’s), they look very similar. Though Newton had an ungodly Y/A and Adj Y/A. Newton was also a lot more efficient as far as not turning the ball over.

I have a feeling, nothing more really, but a feeling that Manziel’s going to be pretty special. (I had a much better feeling before the Browns lost two of their wideouts, Gordon for the entire year.) Maybe not the second coming of Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning, but a lot better than Vince Young. I agree with the poster who said that it’s going to depend on his willingness to put in the work to improve, once DCs get film on his tendencies, adjust, and force him to adapt. Don’t know if he can or will do that.

Then again, I’m the guy who thought last year was going to be Matt Schaub’s breakout year…

Which it was, in the wrong direction.

One thing I think will help Manziel’s career is the collective bargaining agreement’s limitations on off season workouts and limited practice time in pads. I think those things will lead to less coached/more playground style of play which would fit Manziel’s strengths. He may still suffer against good, disciplined NFL teams, so I can’t see a long playoff run unless he changes his style, but he’ll certainly be able to pile up the highlights and stats.

One thing I think will hurt his career is that, after flashing that money sign at the draft after dropping so far, I’m convinced he’s an incredible douchebag and may not have the professionalism the elite QB’s do.

My less-than-expert opinion:
I get the impression that Manziel has a good “feel” for the game (as a QB) and his success isn’t due to pure athleticism.

Vince Young, on the other hand seemed to be a man among boys athletically in college, I was amazed with what he was able to do, but that pure athleticism doesn’t seem to translate to success in the NFL for QB’s very often.
If he doesn’t flame out due to lack of work ethic, it seems like he has a chance to be pretty good.

Because Cleveland.

Exactly. Four games against the Ratbirds and Steelers just might slow him down. I hope the Houston game Nov 16 is televised here. Will be interesting to see the Texan’s D against him. Speedy and big they are.

Ooh! Open @ Pit, close @ Bal.

As someone who lives in DC and sees all the games, that 2012 team was waaaaay overrated. They won a couple games based on innovative scheming, and a couple more late in the season against teams that were mailing it in. Talent-wise, I’ll take the 2014 Browns.
Mike Tanier did a great writeup on Manziel a few weeks ago and broke down one of his crazy made-for-ESPN plays. – http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/70465110/forming-an-opinion-on-quarterback-johnny-manziel-before-the-nfl-draft#!Mtacl

The running around crazy thing is fine when everything breaks down and you have to make something happen; that’s his gift. But as you can see, the slant was open on that play, and Manziel broke the play down. That’s what has to stop. A successful long-term NFL QB hits the slant and lets his WR break a tackle, or else sets up 4th and short in FG range. He doesn’t go all Benny Hill at the first sign of pressure.

As far as I can tell he has all the skills; the question is whether or not he can harness them and the question there is whether he will STFU and listen to what a lameass boring uncool old dude like Kyle Shanahan tells him to. Since I claim no knowledge about his impulse control, attitude, work ethic, etc. I have no idea whether he will do this.

If I had to bet, I’d say those habits are too ingrained for him to get out of them now. I’d love to be wrong, though.

I think the Browns got a winner.

No secret that I am a Steelers fan, and I am not thrilled to see him in our division, but I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t have wanted to see the Steelers get him if they were looking for QB.

If he stays healthy, I think he will do great things. He is dynamic, and he is fun to watch. The only thing I can’t figure out is if he will be able to be as improvisational in the pros as he was in college.

Everyone talks about the leap in game speed in the pros, and there is always that chance that he will be swallowed by the pro defenses… But until that happens, I think as a Browns fan, you finally have something to be excited about.

I hope he hangs around for a while, because he will be great for the league.

This. This may not be an actual Patriots scouting report, but everything I have heard about what dropped Johnny Football in the draft is that many teams were worried that he cannot or will not set aside him party/fame life to devote himself to football 7-days a week. The fear is that he will half-ass workouts and tape study to spend time out partying with Drake and be a “star” and then try to show up on Sundays. He just does not have that talent level.

Of course to ally these fears, he celebrates being drafted by…staying out to 5 am partying with Drake at a club. :smack:

:: cough::

As a Browns fan, is there any point to dread? I mean, you can stay the same, or go up. And Fark was telling me the Browns are the cheapest live games in the NHL (was that you?). So I predict he’ll provide enough gameplay to be entertaining for the upcoming season, and disappear after that.

That should be King Joffery Tebow the 3rd.

Because no one wants to talk about the Carolina picks.

Least of all, Carolina.

I honestly don’t know how Manziel will do with the Browns.

He definitely has the tools to succeed. Comparisons to Tim Tebow are off base, because Manziel has the arm to make NFL throws- Tebow didn’t. And for all his bad boy behavior, Manziel is smart- plenty smart to enough to learn a playbook inside out, IF he’s got the work ethic.

My concerns about Manziel are similar to the concerns I had about RG3: if the guy plays the way he did in college, he’s going to take a beating. Can he endure that kind of punishment? If not, can he learn to be a pocket passer?

He’s an intriguing pick who could be either a steal OR a bust.

Based on the way he feigned happiness in being drafted by the Browns, I would say he has a great future in Hollywood.

Given the Browns’ relative lack of success since the merger and his improvisation skills (not to mention what seem like his less-than-stellar mechanics) which I don’t think tend to translate too well to the pro level (at least not at quarterback) I’m not expecting much in terms of success. I’ve been wrong before but I will honestly be surprised if he makes much of a “dent” in Cleveland. Matter of fact I’ll be surprised if “Johnny Football” is still in the NFL by 2018. If Tim Tebow couldn’t make it more than a couple of seasons in the NFL then why would any rational person expect Manziel to?

Because Tim Tebow is shit at throwing the football and Johnny Manziel is pretty good at it.

Otto Graham?!? Wow, that’s going back!! I can think of only two Browns QBs from over the years: Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar. Both were pretty good but I think you’re right - the Browns haven’t really had an elite quarterback since Otto Graham hung 'em up. That’s a pretty long time.

Because they’re completely different players, with different skillsets, different strengths and weaknesses?

I mean, you might as well point out that Scott Frost and Andre Ware also didn’t make in the NFL, for all the relevance that has.

I think a major reason that Manziel and Newton won’t have similar pro careers (as in, Manziel not so good, Newton pretty damn awesome) is the fact that Newton is 6’5", 250lbs and runs a 4.5 40 yard dash, while Manziel is 6’0", 205lbs and runs a 4.7.

What about the Bengals defense? They were better than both the Steelers and Ravens last year.

There is a reason he was never chosen captain of the A&M team. He is not a leader.

His “impressive” passing stats resulted from his learning to wait until the defensive backs ran their routes, then choosing a target. Impressive running and scrambling to get to that point, granted, but I think pro backs are a bit different than college, even in the SEC. Most D-backs, even in the SEC, don’t make it in the NFL. Those that do (most, anyway), don’t stop once they have run their route. The ones that do stop find new jobs. I predict either a lot of interceptions or sacks, or both. Based on his college performance, I suspect a lot of picks.

The man is talented, but it will take some very patient and high quality coaching to develop it. Given his entitled attitude, I not sure his coaches will show the patience.
