Johns Hopkins CTY program & college admin?

Does participating in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) program aid a youngster in getting into college? My son went for 3 years, loved it, and will be a high school senior next year.

I’m wondering if any of you have had experience with CTY and college admissions. Does it help?

If you have a smart teenager, and you are not familiar with CTY, take a look the program. It is an excellent program for smart children who want a strong intellectual challenge. They teach college level courses to teenagers in the summer. It is a great place to go if you are scary smart, (aren’t we all) want to be with other scary smart teenagers, and be treated as normal.

I am still in high school and went last summer. (I had loads of fun!)

I know it looks impressive to any college one would be applying to just because of its challenge. Yet I do not know if applying to JHU you would have an advantage going to CTY then say, a similar summer program from Northwestern.

My instinct says it would give you a bit of an edge, but I am far from an expert on this.

i went to the CTY program in ireland when i was 16. it was great fun.

on the down side.
the food was dreadful and i lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks on a diet of sweet coffee, chocolate bars and gum.
all my friends were thrown out for drugs, drink, sex things.

the fact i got one of only 6 scholarships available because of my SAT score (800 verbal) looked pretty good on my UCAS admission form to british universities.

i think anything which sets you apart and catches their eye (in a good way) can only help.

but he should include some of the bumpf in case they’re not familiar with the programme.
