Okay, maybe I won’t try smelling it again…
Alt in Cologne, if you must know
I think our skins were saved by the fact he decided we were just a couple of dumb tourists!
You can call yourself very lucky for getting out of this alive, and being a dumb tourist is the ONLY excuse in those matters.
.
The Sneed’s Feed and Seed joke usually needs to be explained to someone.
The only explaination that one needs is why anyone thinks it’s funny,
actually in most places its state and possibly federal law you cant operate on direct family members which is the answer to “why couldnt she operate?”
that and no one knew msg actually makes you hungrier if you eat enough of it
If I ever told any of my dad’s jokes, every single one would have to be prefaced by saying “Well, you see, back in the dark ages, suburban white folk had horribly ignorant stereotypes about women/hispanics/servants/laborers/priests/eye-talians… and ‘those pesky negroes’… ehh, y’know what, I think I’ll skip the jokes.”
…
Oh, and to continue a hijack, I’ve ordered anchovies from big chain pizza places and small local ones (shout out to Salvatore’s and Luigi’s and Lombardino’s… no I won’t tell you where, everyone would move here)…
… and I’ve NEVER had anyone say "You want what?"
I think the actual origin of “you eat Chinese food, and an hour later, you’re hungry again” is that a lot of Americans skip the rice. Which is most of a typical Chinese dish.
The Perfect Master speaks:
Why do you soon feel hungry again after eating Chinese food? Or do you?
Cecil’s conclusion: US meals used to contain more potatoes, which have a high satiety value. It’s not that Chinese food has changed, but US meals used to make you feel fuller.
There’s an old joke that if you eat a Chinese meal, you’re hungry again an hour later. I think that dates from when Chinese food was new here – a Chinese dish containing less meat and more veggies than Americans were used to, so of course it wasn’t as filling as their usual meals.
Yeah. I certainly don’t find it any less filling as a whole than any other food. Honestly, over many decades the only people IRL I’ve heard aver, and continue to aver it’s not filling enough are those “meat & potatoes” type of people who tend to shun “ethnic” type foods and who probably still use AOL.

I realize that this isn’t GQ, but I’m going to say “Cite?” anyway.
I did some quick research, and as best I can tell there are no laws against this, but it is discouraged by medical boards and professional organizations.
For example, the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs states: “Physicians generally should not treat themselves or members of their immediate families." They go on to say that they are concerned about whether the quality of care a doctor is able to provide will be adversely affected by strong emotional attachments to family members who become patients.
The closest I found to directly addressing the question is California, which doesn’t specifically address surgeons, but does address physicians in general:
Can a physician treat and prescribe to family, friends or employees?
There is no law which specifically prohibits a physician from evaluating, diagnosing, treating, or prescribing controlled substances to a family member, employee or friend. However, the practice is discouraged. There are laws to consider when assessing any prescribing issues which include, but are not limited to: 1) a physician cannot prescribe without an appropriate prior exam and a medical indication for the prescription, and 2) an adequate and accurate medical record relating to the provision of services to the patient and documenting the medical need for the prescription must be created and maintained by the physician. Basically, a physician must follow the same practice/protocol for any patient in which medications are prescribed.

Interestingly, here’s an article in a medical journal that states that: “Surprisingly, one large, well-organized survey found that 9% of qualified physicians had actually operated on family members.”
It notes that “Despite published opinions urging special caution, including this one, there are in fact no legal or professional prohibitions against operating on family members.”
The rest of the article is concerned with the ethics of doing so.
Finally, a blog that addresses the subject here:

It’s not nearly as funny in part because how many times I’ve seen Simpsons fans mention it as an example of the SImpsons’ subtle humor.
That and the joke about the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology. (If you don’t get it look at the capitalized letters in the name.)
It’s not nearly as funny in part because how many times I’ve seen Simpsons fans mention it as an example of the SImpsons’ subtle humor.
It took me so long to get it because the joke doesn’t actually make any sense. What, a feed store used to be a brothel?
It’s just a stupid lowbrow pun; you really are thinking about it to hard.
I don’t think the Simpson writers really thought about it that hard.
Isn’t that from Sardinia?

My point was that it would have been easier to get if it were clever rather than stupid.
Yeah. I certainly don’t find it any less filling as a whole than any other food.
As I interpret the saying, it’s not about how filling you find it when you eat it, but about how long it stays with you afterward. It means that it is easy to fill up on, but is quickly digested.
In my experience, the food that keeps you from being hungry for a long time is high in protein and fat, which is not true of 1950’s chop suey.

It’s ethically and morally wise to not treat family members but I cant find any sources that say it is a state or federal crime.
The AMA states it as ethically unwise but allows for exceptions:

Obviously it isn’t hard to think of situations and circumstances where a physician would need to treat a family member.
I think it is an urban myth to think they can’t. Shouldn’t yes; can’t no.
ETA: got ninja’ed. No such thing as too much knowledge I hope. Being the Straight Dope and all…
It is a reasonably clever sight gag. Of course the establishment didn’t used to be a brothel. It used to be a feed store “Chuck’s Seed and Feed”. That’s the joke, son!
There is nothing remotely hokey going on with a guy called Sneed taking over a feed store from a guy called Chuck. The joke is the connection made in your own mind.
I remember seeing sign gags or short references to “Delivered in 30 minutes or your pizza is free!” Throughout the 80’s including on the security vault door of an ICBM silo turned museum I visited where the helpful guide had to explain to younger people that it was a reference to Domino’s slogan of the time.
Of course Domino’s had to stop that particular promotional campaign after its drivers kept running red lights to meet the deadline and killing people.
