Jon Stewart to step down from The Daily Show

But, that’s an interesting point. Because, if Jim Jeffries really would be awesome for the job, I’m afraid he would basically be disqualified for being, for lack of a better term, “iffy”. I mean, Trevor Noah’s “offensive” quotes are very, very, very tame by comparison, and there is a pretend backlash against him in an attempt to change that decision. Are we dooming ourselves to milquetoast social commentary when we insist upon absolute conformity to rules about offense?

You don’t like him, fine. There are lots of popular comics and other entertainers out there I don’t like. In fact, I’ve said that none of the other TDS correspondents have the crops to take over.

You think he’s going to flop? That’s a high probability bet. Larry Wilmore was thought to be a great choice, but he’s not doing well. James Corben was thought to be a rising star and his show is doing worse. Maybe they’ll be pulled. We don’t know. It’s early yet, and Seth Meyers has taken a full year to get better from his very shaky beginning. Nobody wants another Conan situation. CC is going to give him time to develop a style.

I, and others, are just saying that the specifics you give to back up this opinion have been factually wrong. And there’s a smell coming off them, IMO and not speaking for others, that hints at “oh, no, not another black guy in that comedy block.” I find that more offensive than I find Noah’s tweets.

The ‘joke’ about almost running over the Jewish kid in his German car is totally out of line and frankly shows him to be a racist asshole at heart. I’ll never understand the animosity some blacks show towards the Jewish people, many of whom were at the forefront of the civil rights struggle.

I certainly won’t be watching the Daily Show with this guy at the helm.

Who would you choose to be at the helm?

I love Jim Jeffries, but he would be a terrible choice.

The Daily Show anchor desk isn’t just a standup comic gig. It’s a guy who has to have the passion and interest to follow public affairs day after day after day.

I have not been factually wrong except maybe expecting Americans to find his accent all upper crusty. And I specifically said him doing racial material right before racial focussed Nightly Show was the problem. So you can stuff your offense.

I’m not sure what makes you think Jeffries isn’t that guy. His comedy takes on controversial topics straight on (religion and gun control, e.g.). He shows a keen intellect and exactly the same sort of incisive wit as Stewart.

Oh totally. Not one legitimate rebuttal to your rock-solid criticism about how Americans won’t cotton to his accent. Nosirree.

Enjoy grinding that axe.

It does seem odd to me that they have chosen a non-American. So much of The Daily Show revolves around US politics and culture. While an outsider perspective can often be refreshing and insightful, Trevor Noah can’t possibly be expected to understand nuances that an American would pick up without a second thought. But who knows? Maybe he will surprise me. I’m curious to see how things turn out.

Have you watched any of John Oliver’s shows? They are fantastic.

How about someone who isn’t a racist and doesn’t think anti-semitic jokes are a real hoot? That would be good for a start. You know, I liked this young guy when I first checked him out, I thought him a bold choice. But after seeing those tweets, no thank you.

By george, I think he’s got it. Not to mention the passion and the skill to make every episode a nonstop laugh fest. It’s this that made John Oliver’s show a hit.

Of course, Oliver’s not trying to do it every night.

Maybe that’s a good place to start, but what is his or her name?

You clearly aren’t even paying attention. That was specifically the point that I conceded I may have been proven wrong on. Who cares anyway? The proof will be in the ratings, not how effectively you guys think you’re pwning me in this thread.

Okay, you sold me. I actually just stuck up for him on Facebook.

Still rooting for Aasif though.

Would have preferred Aasif or Wyatt Cenac (though he is gone). But, I’ve also liked the few pieces with Trevor Noah and the other new guy, Hasan Minhaj (senior Indian correspondent, I think - though that’s somewhat offensive I guess…). Also like Jordan Klepper. There is a good bunch there right now. Don’t love Jessica Williams, but can see her growing on me.

I think Wyatt Cenac would have ruled, but ever since Arsenio Hall’s show got mysteriously cancelled, I’ve wondered what problem network television seems to have with black guys running talk shows.

I think they’re going to have to rebuild the correspondent team. Samantha Bee and Jason Jones are leaving and I think I heard Jessica Williams is also leaving.

I wonder how quickly they’ll let him give input on new correspondents.

While I don’t know enough about Noah to be particularly invested on him, I find this whole story with the old tweets of a comedian reappearing to haunt him fascinating.
