Fiveyearlurker, you have not quoted all the jew jokes. There’s the rappers/jew joke, German car/jew joke, "going down "/jewish women joke. How many "inoffensive " jew jokes does a non Jew get to make before it looks iffy?
He has a YouTube channel. I, for one, found him hilarious. He has videos of his shows in Australia, US and South Africa, they are adapted to the audience, and they are equally funny.
Australians apparently found his Australian accent spot on.
You’re right. Those were in images that didn’t come up before, for some reason.
“Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!”
“Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as rich Jewish man #BeatsByDreidel”
“Messi gets the ball and the real players try foul him, but Messi doesn’t go down easy, just like jewish chicks.”
Really? If these are the most offensive things that a comedian has said, then bravo, you’re a pretty damn clean comic. Are they offensive? Sure, mildly, I guess. Again, being offensive is part of the gig of a comedian. I’m trying to come up with a non-offensive comedian of any merit. Jim Gaffigan maybe? I’m sure I could dig something up to pretend to be offended by. Bill Cosby? Well…
The Mount Rushmore of comedians over the past 30 years would be an interesting topic, but would almost certainly include Carlin and Pryor. If these tweets were the line, then these two guys happily danced over it and were not even within view of it by the time they were finished. And we were all better for it. I’m glad that people pretending to be offended weren’t able to shut them down.
To answer your question ("How many “inoffensive " jew jokes does a non Jew get to make before it looks iffy?”), as many as they decide for their art form. If their art form is not for you, then don’t watch it.
Jon Stewart told a joke about the transgendered, and, to me, it was considerably more offensive than any of these, and I’m glad that I didn’t use that to not watch 20 years of a quality show. But, if it was too offensive for you, I wouldn’t fault you for not watching. I just don’t get this knee jerk response people have to say, “This was offensive to me, so I don’t want you to be able to watch it.”
Bzzzt! Wrong answer. The audience decides.
Anyways,I am not offended and I’m not starting some twitter campaign against the guy. I think he’s a bad choice for the reasons already stated. The rebuttals to my reasons have fallen flat, imho. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
No, the comedian decides what to say, and the audience decides how large a platform he or she receives. The audience has fuck all to say about what the comedian talks about, but it’s interesting that you think that they should.
Lol. They get to decide when it gets iffy not whether he says it or not. How is that not obvious?
From what I’ve seen, Noah tweets quite a bit. For all the mining to come up with those tame jokes (yes, they are ridiculously tame) seems like just trying to find something to be offended about.
It’s not one of his best, but it reads to me more like a joke about being so blind drunk that you accidentally have sex with a guy. I guess the notion that a woman could have a beard and a penis was considered a lot more ludicrous in 1999 than it is now.
Sure. They get to decide if it’s “iffy” for them. They don’t get to decide if it’s “iffy” for the comedian or if it’s “iffy” for me. Because “iffy” is personal.
Name a comic that you think should have the job. Do you think I won’t be able to find something they said that is “iffy” to someone?
Not a rhetorical question. Go for it. Who should replace Stewart? I’ll find something “iffy”.
I’ve already found some “iffy” things Stewart has said. Should he have been pulled off the show?
By the by, just found out that Trevor Noah’s mom is half Jewish.
Well he’s in the clear then. Phew!
Eta: half on the grandma side???
I probably should have said my bit more carefully. You’re right–he builds his material heavily around culture, not around accents. However, in the stuff I listened to, a lot more than 1% includes accents. My understanding is that he’s very good at languages (speaks six, is that what I read?), and so it’s pretty natural for him to drop into accents when speaking as different characters in his act, whether it’s the taco truck guy or the financial news guy or the president of South Africa or his dad or the California surfer chick or whoever.
But yeah, the accent isn’t the joke, really.
Notice you ducked my question. Who should replace Stewart?
You won’t answer because it is obviously a trap. Comedians are supposed to offend on some level. Again, Jim Gaffigan might be the best example of a “clean” comic of any merit that exists today, and if you say he should replace Stewart, I already have some material lined up that would be considered “iffy”.
If “iffy” is a bad thing, maybe comedy is not your thing.
If you want clean, there’s always Bill Cosby. Oh wait…
Okay, how about Carrot Top then?
Leaving aside the issue of that being the worst Daily Show ever, I’m pretty sure his name alone would be considered offensive!
For pretty complex reasons, his name would not be offensive.
If they’re going to go with a non-American, I would have preferred Jim Jeffries. Quick wit. Shows a keen awareness of American politics, and a style similar to Stewart’s.
Look buddy, I said I wasn’t offended. I don’t find Noah very funny, full stop. I also don’t think his style of comedy, from what I’ve seen, will combine with the Nightly Show to make a very popular hour. I am not starting some internet campaign to keep him from trying. Like I said, time will tell not all the boosters here “proving” how “wrong” I am.
I like the idea of Trevor Noah and I’m cautiously optimistic at the choice. I know almost nothing of his routines other than his Daily Show appearances and a few short standup routines I’ve seen.
In general he seems smart, but also very aware politically on a global scale, which is something that the Daily Show needs. He comes off as arrogant, sure, but I think most of that is him just playing off Jon as the straight man. As lead, he’ll be able to tone that down a bit. Or I hope so. Because one of the things that made Jon work is that he could critique America as an American and say “boy, do we suck!” That doesn’t play as well when someone else says we suck.
But I say I’m cautiously optimistic because from what I’ve seen of Trevor, he hasn’t quite grasped what makes things funny in America as compared to South Africa. He’ll need a bit of help from his writers but once he starts figuring it out I think he’ll really provide some powerful insight as Host and I’m excited to see where he leads The Daily Show.
I was unfamiliar with Jim Jeffries, but a google of his name finds sufficient material that people would be offended by which would pretty much disqualify him within 12 minutes of the announcement!
I care nothing about offensiveness. I just think he’s funnier and more attuned to American politics than Noah.
