Jon Stewart to step down from The Daily Show

Jon has seemed tired for a while. Glad he’s going on his terms. Whoever takes over should make the show theirs and not try to keep it what it currently is.

Sad news indeed.

I too am going to miss his version of TDS, but jeez, he’s been doing the same thing for something like 17 years. I’m pretty sure I’d be looking for something different to do after all that time.

I think Craig got kind of tired of things and left on his own terms, though correct me if I’m wrong. He did briefly return with the Kilborn File about 5 years ago, but it did not succeed. Did he really call people has-beens outside his joking news reporter style jokes? I know he had some problems with staff on the Daily Show, but I don’t think I heard all that much bad stuff about him personally.

I just read on another site that he has a long-term contract with HBO. Besides, his show is a hit and is really good at the longer segments of analysis.

In my little dream world, I’d more Larry Wilmore to the Daily show and give John Oliver his own show afterwards. Larry would fit well.

This. And he doesn’t even have to put his pants on.

I really don’t see John Oliver coming back. He’s got a nifty deal at HBO right now. He only has to do one show a week, rather than every night, doesn’t have to worry about advertisers who might get mad at him, and has a great deal of creative control on a much higher-profile network. No way he gives that up.

Assuming that Comedy Central keeps the Daily Show going, I expect they’ll do what they did last time a new host was needed–hire from outside. Jon had no association with the show during the Craig Kilborn days, and I imagine the next host will be someone who’s had no association with the show during the Jon Stewart days.

He’s also said that he really enjoys the format of hitting one topic hard once a week (plus the other smaller bits) and the ability to say “fuck” as often as he likes. Granted, “hand that feeds you” and all but it seems like he’s happy doing what he’s doing and HBO is happy with him doing it.

Here’s a Time article on possible replacements.

Aisha Tyler hadn’t occurred to me, but she’d be a great choice. She might be too busy to do Archer then, though, unfortunately.

Give it to Mark Teixeira.

Or Steve Carell.

Please, NOT Kristen Schall or Michael Che!

Aisha Tyler could be a really good choice. A not quite random thought I just had was Yvette Nicole Brown, who is clearly intelligent and thoughtful enough to carry that part of the gig.

For me, the key thing is that the show continues to serve the vital societal need it has come to fill. It needs someone who is thoughtful while also having comedic chops.

John Oliver seems very happy where he is and he gets more freedom on HBO. No way would he leave.

I could see TDS doing a reboot. They basically did that when Jon came on board. While we have all come to know and love the skewering of the news Jon serves up, it doesn’t need to keep on in that style. I suspect it will, but I hope the next person is given room to make it his or her own. In this day and age of the demand for instant results and success, I hope it doesn’t become another Conan Incident.

She used to do Daily Show-esque bits on Late Night, back before the Daily Show existed. So it would be kind of fun to see her go back to that. And she’s certainly good at thinking on her feet.

But I suspect CC will want someone younger.

Anyhoo, they’ll almost certainly go with someone with a background in stand-up or improv, which rules out a lot of the choices people have been throwing out there.

In anycase, I feel kinda bad for whoever it is. It’s a pretty high-pressure gig.

Him and Colbert were the closest thing we had to fair news coverage. I can’t see anyone doing as good of a job as he did with it.

I like Paula Poundstone but I think she’s (gotten) too old for the job.

I’m sure (or at least hoping) that the next host will be female (like the next president?) Tina Fey or Amy Poehler could certainly step in since their sitcoms have ended, but I wonder if age would again be an issue.

Amy Schumer? Perhaps the best choice is Whitney Cummings - she’s sharp, witty and quick. BTW I HATE Whitney Cummings…

According to this, the “favorites” are John Oliver, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock and Tina Fey; many more possibilities are named and discussed.

I’m okay with it. Also, I never heard of Jon Stewart until he took over TDS duty. I’d like to think he isn’t the only smart, funny host I’ve never heard of before. Maybe they can find another.

No love for Aasif Mandvi?

Terrible news for news, for liberals, for the world.

Brian Unger!
