Now that Jon Stewart’s time at The Daily Show is short, I think it’s time to discuss the quality of his impressions. Stewart has always admitted to being a horrible impressionist, but a few of his voices, shall we say, crack me up. To wit:
GHWB. All Stewart has to do is say, “Heh, heh, heh,” with that face and I laugh.
Dick. A combination of Edward G. Robinson and Burgess Meredith. Classic.
Mitch. An extended meditation on the tortoise from the Warner Bros. cartoons. Probably Stewart’s most developed piece of satire. Terrifically funny.
QEII. “Halloooooo!!” When I’m on the can and my dog sticks his head in to determine how things are going, this is what I say. He cocks his head as if pondering a psychopath and I laugh.
Charlie Rangel. As a tired old Jewish deli owner. Kills me.
I know Stewart does an Obama, and he had to have done a Clinton (Bill), but I don’t really remember those.
So please help me remember some of the other voices from Jon’s long stay at TDS. If you can link them up that would be great. Perhaps we could put together a poll.
His best is definitely that laugh he does for Bush II though. Its infectious.
He actually does a pretty good John Kerry impression that actually sol unds like John Kerry. But the most fun ones are the ones that you mentioned, where they don’t really sound like the person at all, but still invoke the persons personality.
The Jersey Bada Bing No Disrespect Guy, Heh heh heh, and his Chuck Shumar.
Also his Mitch and Haaaallloooo voice always make me laugh so I guess I like all of them
His caricatures are wonderful because he takes maybe one or two qualities and just sells the crap out of them.
I love all the ones mentioned, and will add his whole Donald Trump shtick - talking to him, talking as him, yelling about how the Short-Fingered Vulgarian eats pizza, etc…
I agree, his Cheney impression was absolutely impeccable and dead-pan. I don’t think anyone could do a Cheney like Jon Stewart. All of his other “impressions” were basically just caricatures or gags, but his Cheney was as soul-crushingly evil as the actual man.
