Jonagolds for Pie

I recently scored some beautiful Jonagold apples for .69 per pound. I’ve always wanted to try making an apple pie. Do Jonagolds bake well?

More sour apples such as Granny Smith are best. I’ve never tried Jonagold, but you might try them in a galette first.

They’ll be fine. Apple pie ain’t rocket science. You can add a little lemon juice (a teaspoon or so) to bump up the flavor, IMHO Jonagolds aren’t that tart.

I like Northern Spy, or Empire, or Winesap best. But most apples work, other than red delicious, which are too disgusting to even eat.

Not if picked off the hundred-year-old tree, but if bought at the store - eww.

Jonagolds will be fine. I would probably throw one granny smith in, but it’s probably not strictly necessary.

If you want a particularly good apple pie, you would mix the Jonagolds with two other kinds of apples, like a fuji and a granny smith.
