He is a troll. An unattractive, un-funny, average acting troll.
I understand that not everyone is Brad Pitt (good looking), or Tom Hanks (great actor) or even Vince Vaughn (funny)
He keeps getting work. And good work. And he was nominated for an Oscar! Twice! come on!
So, WTF? Does he have a relative in the business? Or is there something actually there? The only role (and I am being serious here) that I thought he was good in was “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. He wasn’t bad in “Moneyball”, but not oscar worthy. Other than that? Nothing good.
I just saw that he is in another upcoming movie called “22 Jump Street”, which looks like a comedy… The guy just isn’t funny to me. But more important… He is just not believable in any role I have seen him in, with the exception of 40YOV, which he plays a basement-living troll, and a slight exception of Moneyball, which he wasn’t bad in, but the role wasn’t a tough one. I think any average actor could have played that role just as well if not better.
There is just nothing there.
Do you all share with me, or do you think he is as talented as his work load seems to indicate?
Of course not. Which is why I said “pick your favorite actor”. I realize “favorite” is subjective. And if your favorite is Hill, fine by me. I son’t understand it, but dine by me.
All I am asking is for you to explain what I am clearly not getting. Don’t focus on my choices of great actor, good looking or funny.
They were just examples that I can understand. Hill is an example I don’t get on any level of appeal.
He also shows up at many of those Friar’s Club Roasts, and he isn’t funny. I don’t like Ben Stiller, but I can understand why some people like him. And he is a good fit in some movies (Like Dodgeball, for instance). But Hill? I got nothin’.
It’s a little known fact that Jonah Hill is actually a 79 year old black woman with a limp. She busts her ass every film to come off as an unfunny unattractive troll.
[Jon Lovitz] ACTING!! [/Lovitz]
As long as Michael Cera walks the earth, Hill will not be the most unfunny unattractive troll, IMO.
I think he’s pretty good at what he does, which is kind of play the same guy all the time. He has kind of an underdog, everyman kind of quality. Actually, I see him as more of a character actor but he has managed to get larger roles.
BTW, 22 Jump Street is a sequel to 21 Jump Street (based on the TV show) and was actually not bad.
I don’t get the attraction either, but he’s just the most recent on a list that includes Pauly Shore, Adam Sandler and others whose presence on screen mystifies me.
While I wouldn’t sing Sandler’s praises to anyone, that’s just mean lumping him with Shore. And Hill, while still not a great comedic thespian, is readily better than both of them.
How do you mean he’s a troll? Perhaps there is something in his appearance that triggers dislike in your brain? For myself I am not used to his new, thinner, less troll-like appearance. I guess I identified with him more before.
I like Hill’s delivery. He is understated and his accent is just a bit slurred which gives his voice character. I hated Wolf of Wall Street but Jonah Hill calling up his boss to quit on the spot was hilarious even though it was spoiled by the trailer.
I don’t think he’s a terrible comedic character actor, and I have found him funny enough in most of his roles. But I have to admit being stymied by the two Oscar nominations. My only explanation is that those were too very good movies (both Best Picture nominees) so he was sort of basking in the glow. I was kind of annoyed by his performance in Wolf of Wall Street.
He’s a good actor. He plays the parts that fit him, and the audience gets to feel like they are better looking than the actor instead of the other way round.
I don’t mind him because he’s a helpful metric. “Oh, is Jonah Hill in this movie? Then I will pass, thank you.” I feel the same way about his buddy Seth Rogen.
