My GF is a teacher and currently responsible for organising a school production of ‘Joseph’ within her school.
They (the school) obviously have the original soundtrack and probably a couple of versions of the show on video performed by various casts around the world, but are having difficulty with the kids singing along with the adult voices. They would like to get hold of a recording of the musical sung by children. (It is a special school and the kids have mainly Down syndrome or various stages of Autism - the ‘highness’ of some of the adult singing is far beyond their capabilities to mimic).
Does anyone know of the release of such a performance and where it may be available for purchase?
Your two best choices are the Original London Cast (with Gary Bonds) and the Compacts for Pleasure version (with Tim Rice).
Contact www.footlight.com for purchase.
Thanks for the suggestion, Annie. Are you sure the Gary Bond performance was when he was a child? His biography suggests he was 32 when it was performed. (unless I found a different Gary Bond).
Walloon, I made the assumption, perhaps wrongly, that anyone who would know anything about the stated question would also immediately recognise ‘Joseph’ as the abbreviated title of the musical in question.
The two CDS I mentioned have children’s choruses. There’s no entirely children’s production on CD. There is a karokee version and I think a Broadway Kids CD has one song from the show on it.
And yes, they are called “cast recordings.” Some people in the theatre community got nuts if you call them “soundtracks.”
Thanks Annie. And sorry for the use of ‘soundtrack’, didn’t mean for anyone to go nuts!
I think the school were hoping to see or hear a previous performance put on entirely by kids (for ease of comparison), but if no such show has been released then they will just have to look elsewhere (or do without). I guess we can ask around local schools and see if any of them have archived a performance of the musical by past pupils that they might allow us to view.
