Thank you! There were a lot of great contributions and clarifying arguments in the thread; it’s unfortunate that such a terrible story devolved into a legalistic argument about semantics.
That is why I became frustrated. The Duggars are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I do not have the temperament to watch them without becoming very frustrated. The Cafe Society’s conversation was fighting my ignorance. It allowed me to see others insight and read information that was linked. I find it insulting that Bricker felt he must determine for me how to weigh the word “likely” and in doing so took way the discussion.
Its not baseless. There is literally no reason to tie the HPV vaccine to sex except if someone’s linked them in their minds already. It prevents cancer. The fact that the FRC has an objection to it because of their crazy beliefs on sex is their problem and not any of ours, and is a completely legitimate gripe against that group.
There’s your bias showing. You consider it rare that liberals are victims of baseless attacks. Every post by certain people (you know who they are) in that SLIOTD thread is a baseless attack. You may not be needed because many more liberals are around to defend the accused, but your absence is notable when you show up in other threads defending conservatives
For one, you do this with conservative ideas. You defend them not necessarily because you’re in agreement, but in an attempt to weaken the liberal attack as valid. You may not know this, oh hell, of course you know this because I think you’re doing it on purpose, but you are famous for this. Second, you can think of this as an exercise to work out some brain muscles you don’t usually work on. You did say you were on this board, in part, because you want to test your arguments against liberals. You’ve done that in spades, now try it the other way on this board for once and defend the liberals against the conservatives. Lastly, who knows? It might be fun for you.
Here’s another article about how Gothardism blames the victims. Plus some other disgusting information.
I do have to wonder if there were are any similar behaviors performed by the younger brothers. They were raised in the same environment. And John David was only about 12 or 13 when Josh was doing this.
They follow Leviticus, where it’s call clearly defined and spelled out.
Thanks for the link. That is truly scary. Victims feel guilt when in the most supportive of environment. But theses poor girls will also have the weight of the lost "cash cow " guilt as well. This family does not handle stress in a healthy manner. The victims of Josh’s actions are going to domino. Some may have earned the rath of public disclosure. Like anyone who knew at TLC, or any politician who used them to gain the conservative vote.
I have been thinking along similar lines. The oldest child, so no older brothers to observe or talk to, raised in an isolated, sheltered environment - no school mates, practically no contact with ordinary people from outside the cult. A boy reaches puberty and his body starts behaving in strange new ways. What was he told to prepare him for the changes he would go through? Was he actually told anything? A teenage boy having all these strange feelings and urges with no idea why, or that they’re normal. No tv, no mainstream media, all the women in his life covered up from neck to knee. Parents modeling a relationship of male dominance/female submission. A constantly pregnant mother with too many children to be anything other than vaguely neglectful.
Inappropriate curiosity and inappropriate behavior seem almost inevitable in the context of that environment.
In a group home, they (at least the females) would have gotten their HPV shots, I assume. (Are they giving these to male chillun too?)
As well as all the other usual shots.
Has it ever been disclosed if the Duggar kids have gotten all their vaccinations? What does Gothardism have to say about kids getting vaccinated?
I would doubt he had much help with puberty. However, I imagine with their beliefs they talked about sex more than most. You can’t damn it without talking about it. I don’t think lust was a concept often covered in my early childhood.
A lot of us believe that this was not the first, or at least only, time those girls were abused, and who knows what happened to the boys too, either in or out of the home?
One of the basic ideas of modern childrearing is that you always offer an alternative behavior the kid can do. It’s as simple as, when I know my daughter is about to fuss at an explanation, I might say, “Now you say, ‘okay, Daddy,’” and she does. Or it’s complex, where you find out why a kid hit another kid, what he was trying to accomplish, and then brainstorm other ways he could have accomplished his goal without resorting to violence.
If you condemn all sexual behavior equally, if you offer the kid no acceptable alternative, you increase the risk of the kid’s choosing the most unacceptable release for his sexual urges.
Edit: not that I’m arguing you’re wrong :).
Actually that was I was sarcastically trying to say:). They made an issue of a non issue. In a most unhealthy way.
Not to mention parents who practically dry hump each other in front of the children, and talk about how wonderful sex is over and over, but tell the kids “you can’t do this yet”. Sick
And we’ve been told that they kids aren’t even allowed to masturbate!
How do they even enforce that? Do these kids have no privacy at all, ever, even when they go to the bathroom?
Are they even allowed to have wet dreams?
You can’t stop a male human from having wet dreams.
You can punish him for having one, though, even though it’s not under his control.
No, these kids probably don’t have any privacy, ever, and if they take more than the absolute minimum needed on the toilet someone is going to notice.
It doesn’t matter if they have privacy or not. They have had it drilled into them that masturbating is a sure ticket straight to hell and they actually believe it.
I read an article about an 8 year old girl who was caught masturbating, and was forced to stand in front of the entire congregation and confess her sin. Can you imagine?
It turns out that some people believe vaccines contain bits of aborted fetuses. Yes, really. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Duggars believed that, given their general scientific illiteracy.
I am not quite sure what the Duggars believe on vaccines but there was an episode where those morons indicated they had a house full of kids with needless cases of chicken pox.
Here’s a video making rounds on Reddit., where Josh makes a joke about incest. Not saying it’s damning, but the news makes you look at that joke differently.
