Josh Duggar (Duggar kid 1/19) to be executive director of Family Research Council

Josh Duggar is taking a job as Executive Director of the Family Research Council’s lobbying arm. They were much mentioned during the Chick Fil A fusterclucking and are notorious for producing and distributing “gays=pedophiles” literature.

Politics aside, does anybody know what his experience is? The best bio I can find of him is that he’s a 25 year old guy from Arkansas who was homeschooled, has a GED, and has never completed as much as an Associates degree from an accredited college. While at least they’re consistent with their aggressively anti-intellectual appeal, I’m curious how his credentials compare with directors of similarly funded groups.

All I know is that the DC gay media need to keep an eye on the Fruit Loop bars, because he’ll probably be visiting them within 6 months of starting the job. That seems to be the trajectory for most of these kind of folks.

It’s really a shame he’s a phobe and (allegedly) straight…he’s kind of cute.

He’d be a fool to turn down the job: he’s 25 with three kids to support, 18 more on the way, and no experience doing anything else other than being on a reality show about being Duggar Spawn (and shite- there’s 18 more who are just as qualified at that as he is). I’m just surprised that such a light CV seemed appealing to FRC.

Countdown to the “The name of the club is BONDAGE and Mr. Duggar claims he only stepped in because he thought it was a museum about the Israelites sojourn in Egypt, though he neglects to say why he thought a museum was blaring dance music, was open at 2 a.m. on a Saturday, or why he was wearing a fake moustache and leather chaps” news item begins now.

He’s extremely conservative, he’s fairly famous, and he’s been observing his parents work over the media since he was a teenager. It seems like a shrewd move for the FRC, who will use him as a figurehead rather than brains.

Shrewd, but rather a slap in the face to more qualified and experienced candidates.

The latest episode of their reality program showed Josh and his wife looking at homes in Georgetown and acting shocked at the $2 million+ price tags. It was all very fake, as I’m sure the FRC will be helping them with the cost of a home and it will end up being out in the suburbs.

I don’t watch the show; did they go into the FRC’s mission?

It wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out the Duggars’ home life was actually more like this.

My sister was the first person I ever heard say, “You just know that at least one of those kids is going to be gay.” :o

Non-profits don’t often shower the executive director in riches. I guess the FRC has money, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his salary is a pretty modest professional salary - less than $100K.

Making you wonder how, if the show wasn’t completely staged, he would even get pre-approved to look at a $2 million house.

Is he the Duggar son that has had all of the “pings my gaydar” comments over the years?

No, so far they haven’t even disclosed where he’s working on the show. Although it’s obvious they are very conservative, the family is very careful about not expressing any anti-gay beliefs on the show, and I don’t expect that to change as it would open up a big can of worms for them.

I seem to remember they loaded the kids in the 18 wheeler for a trip to the ridiculous Creation Science museum.

Oh yeah, that was an interesting trip. They’ve talked about creationism and being pro-life and all that, but expressing anti-gay views is something they totally avoid. And yes, the law of averages probably means at least one of their kids is gay - not that they will ever be able to live out of the closet and be accepted by their family/community.

That would be biting the hand that feeds them. This is the same networkthat brings us Toddlers n Tiaras, Randy to the Rescue, Breaking Amish, the Virgin Diaries and My Teen is Pregnant and So Am I. You know, the Learning Channel.

TLC can only offend or pander to one demographic at a time.

They still do educational programming as well: Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. (I wonder how long before they make a dynastic marriage between one of the Duggar boys and one of the Boo-Boo daughters, one of whom is a proven breeder which should appeal to them. (I might be watching too much Game of Thrones.)

Some realtors like to hold open houses regardless of the price tag.

Ooh! I can’t wait for the Red(neck) Wedding!

In Arkansas, Josh and his wife appear to live pretty modestly - a 2 bedroom house, shopping at thrift stores. His parents basically said when he got married that he was an adult now and it was his responsibility to make his own money and care for his family. He probably gets money from 19 Kids, but I wouldn’t bet on it being a fortune. I’d imagine that the family considers the show a kind of ministry, although I’d bet Michelle Duggar (who is portrayed to be the smarter of the two parents) is a pretty good negotiator.

There’d probably be a lot more yelling of “You missed one! She just crawled under the sofa!” than nice people had really ought to do.

House HoneyBooBoo got around $60,000 for their first season (that’s for the whole season, not per episode) and renegotiated to the low six figures for the second, which is what Jon & Kate were making at the height of their popularity, so the Duggars (Ma & Pa, not Josh) are probably in that low six-figure range. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Duggars and Josh probably get as much if not more from speaking/personal appearances they get as a result of the show than from the show itself.

He’ll probably work at FRC for a while, have his sex scandal, and then get enough from his “LOVE ME MOMMY AND PLUG UP YOUR UTERUS!” memoir to co-own the Waffle House he works out. If he doesn’t, you know that one of those siblings is going to need money enough to write a memoir.
If their parents cleared $20,000 per month after taxes, I still don’t know how they’d maintain basic needs and comfort and pay medical insurance and dental and set up college funds for all the kids. Of course I’m doubting they plan to send them through college (Josh hasn’t gone after all).

They are adamant about not giving their kids any education that might conflict with their religious beliefs. I know some of their fellow fundie families use an online program called CollegePlus, but whether it’s accredited or comparable to any real college education is pretty doubtful.

Besides the income from the show, they own a lot of rental property and some other miscellaneous businesses like the used car lot Josh worked at. They are proud of having no debt, which is admirable but much easier to do when you have income from a reality show coming in.

Isn’t their youngest child (the one who was several weeks premature) special needs? If it weren’t for public programs and the reality show, I’m guessing that would have ended the ‘no debt’ thing in and of itself.
