So Joystiq is closing. It’s never been a GREAT site, but it was the best “general video gaming” blog that I could find to throw up on my RSS feed, which is my preferred method of consuming digital media. Do any of you guys frequent any video game sites? It seems like most of what’s out there is either too specialized or too broad, in that they cover “general nerd stuff” more than just video games.
I think Kotaku might fit your bill.
I personally visit:
PC gaming focused:
Rock paper shot gun
Pc Gamer,
PC gamesN
More general gaming:
Kotaku,
Eurogamer,
Gamespot,
Polygon
Kotaku is the stock answer, but they’re at least 30% terrible and everything that is wrong with internet journalism. That said they do have a good broad look at gaming once you get used to the filtering you need.
Polygon and Rock, Paper, Shotgun are probably the two I follow most closely (I tend to be PC-primary). Video game journalism in general isn’t in the best place these days, though - it’s being squeezed by budgets on the one side and the demand for more traffic (rather than quality) on the other.
In the past I’ve found Kotaku to have way too much filler, and RPS has always struck me as less-than-professional even by modern online gaming journalism standards. I’ll give Polygon a look.
Yeah, I think Polygon is far and away your best choice. RPS is PC-only (IIRC) and patchy. Kotaku seems to be half filled with general nerd stuff. Good if you like that, otherwise a bit lacking.
Gosh. I only now noticed that GameSpy went under two years ago. I used to read gaming sites a lot more often a decade or so ago, but about the time GameSpy started dropping The Daily Victim I kind of lost interest in the site, and the sites of secondary interest followed. I skim Blues’ News, but generally if I am looking for gaming related info I just do a Google search, and often find something from Kotaku or IGN. I guess I’ll try looking at the sites suggested and see if they are anywhere near as exciting as following gaming news used to be. Thanks.
Kotaku is an awful site full of click bait and other garbage.
Kotaku Core has just been brought to my attenton. It is a tag used for the “core” gamings stuff, like news, reviews and trailers.
Engadget took in a bunch of the Joystiq folks for their gaming coverage: Joystiq x E
Interesting! Thanks for the heads up!
Polygon has been my go-to for a while. Pretty easy recommendation.
Kotaku used to be solid, but has turned into a lot of puffed-up clickbait with a toxic commenting culture. Almost as bad as the “old school” videogame sites like IGN and Gamespot.
