(a little background first: It runs from 6th grade through 12th grade, but I was only there on scholarship for the four years of high school. All throughout it, I noticed that the prevailing pattern was that most of the kids who went there were assholes because their parents really didn’t give a shit enough to teach them a sense of reality and proper decorum. The others that I was friends with or knew casually were quite genial because their parents had cared enough to instill good qualities and a sense of moral responsibility into their everyday behaviour. Let’s just say that most of the kids that weren’t in touch with reality or proper behaviour also were some of the ones that consistently screwed up in general but always had their parents to bail them out of it.)
Upon entering the campus and going about the tasks of finding friends and surprising them with a visit from me, I encountered the more vile urchins inhabiting the middle school section. Unfortunately, it’s harder to find a courteous child on this campus at that level, and it seems like the younger they are, the less conscious they are of how stupid and inconsiderate they appear. I promptly attempted to escape their idle chitchat and ridiculous questions directed at me, and went on to the high school to drop in on friends. I realized that a lot of the kids who were ridiculous when I was attending were more ridiculous still, but seemed to have realized they hadn’t much of a future ahead of them besides living off of their trust funds until they ran out. Thank god/dess for the friends I knew that were more than enough to counteract any unpleasant experience endured with the necessary urchins.
Upon leaving, I had to pass through the middle school section again, and this time I was having a conversation with a friend as we walked. The kids up in front of us had to have been about 7th grade level, and insisted on mimicking the conversation in a snotty maner. It’s a good thing I have enough self-control not to have gutted them right there and then, but I did manage to reply with one of my usual snarky comments, which they really didn’t understand. Oh well; they’ll either grow out of their ridiculousness or cause their parents a lifetime of misery for the parents’ absolute lack of parenting skills other than bitching at other people for disciplining their children properly. I hope there’s some way of making it both solutions.
I feel a little bad for my generation because I feel to some extent we’ve de-evolved so much that we’re really not going to contribute to the advancement of society. Then I look at the people I’m going to college with that I actually like and I realize that there’s enough of us out there that care and have the drive to succeed and make a difference in this world. There may be a lot of idiots in this world, but it seems that we overcome that with the few of us that are willing to do good out there.

Feh! I knew what ‘gay’ meant by the time I was 4 or 5 and every single person I knew knew what it meant at least by 2nd or 3rd grade. Seriously, how clueless do you think kids are? I can’t imagine a 15 year old walking around who doesn’t know what gay means. Kids are mean and thoughtless and extremely self-absorbed. This has to be beaten out of them. Life usually manages it by the time they get a job…and then they realize that gasp the whole orange doesn’t belong to them. They just get a slice, like everybody else.
And the reason I am allowed to say that is because I was one…as were we all. It’s an inevitable process, called “growing up,” but until it happens, I have to say that I’d just as soon not encounter 'em.

And, for the record, I really do think that the last ten years has created a whole new kind of monster…The Teenage Girl Armed With Cell Phone. Before, you only had to run when girls were in packs…a teenage girl by herself was relatively harmless.
Now, she phones in the backup, and we have to hear the screaming and giggling and “OH MY GOD, LIKE, YEAH!” even if she’s ostensibly alone.

In regard to the girl in the theater, she represents a small amount of teens. Most of us, are not as obnoxious, although the few that are the talkative ones. That really does make me embarrassed to be 17.

As for the issue of teenaged girls at the movies, and their behavior while there----
I went to the movies twice last weekend: *Gangs Of New York * on Saturday night, The Two Towers on Sunday night. On both nights, there were a fair amount of kids in the theatre ranging from age 12 to 18. And, yes, on both nights, I had my movie going pleasure sporadically interrupted by the callous and unthinking conversation of others.
But, it wasn’t teenagers doing it. Nope.
For Gangs , it was some worthless 35-year old piece of shit in a Target windbreaker who felt the need to point out every little detail to his wife/girlfriend/crack whore in a nice, normal, conversational tone. His worthless piece of shit wife/girlfriend/crack whore also couldn’t take the violence, and hid her eyes repeatedly, asking loudly, “Is it over yet?” They eventually shut the fuck up.
For The Two Towers, it was some worthless 50 year old piece of shit Tolkien fan, who informed his worthless piece of shit dyed-hair wife about every little deviation from the novel. This worthless piece of shit eventually shut the fuck up once I politely informed him that I didn’t pay 8.25 to hear his bullshit.
So, one does not need to be a teenager to be worthless, or a piece of shit, or a waste of oxygen. But keeping in the spirit of the OP, I’ll just catagorize 35 to 50 year olds as worthless and a waste of oxygen simply because they annoyed me.
I did not mean that people should not do their best to stomp out intolorance in the world. But if RexDart does not like teenagers, there is nothing wrong with that, it is his opinion and he is entitled to it, just as you are intitled to yours. This is probally my biggest bitch with the world in general; it seems as though everyone thinks that “you can beleive what ever you want and think whatever you want as long as it does not differ from what I think and beleive”.
Liquid Chaos, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But when voicing it in a public message board, other people are entitled to their opinions too. If Rex Dart wants to voice his opinion in public, he of course may do so. Everybody else gets the same privilege, though.
As for this being “too PC for the pit”, well, the Pit has never been a place where you can rant without criticism or having to defend what you say. If you really want to rant about something without having to defend it, go shout in your pillow or scream at the stars. If you post it here, there’s a box down there marked “reply” where other people can comment on what you say. If you can’t stand the flames, get out of the Pit.

To use your examples*, Trent Lott moves legislation; his racism can, at least potentially, influence the laws of our land. John Rocker is a public figure; his racism can, at least potentially, influence people who look up to sports figures. JoePutz1234** gripes in a message board; his racism can, at least potentially, be good fodder for a flame fest or a debate if it interests people enough.
What else do you expect? If I post that everyone in Dallas is an idiot with less personality than a lemming***, should I expect you to answer with “Wow, that’s cool.”?

Why the hell does he need a cite? It’s personal experience. It’s a personal experience a lot of people happen to share. Hell, I knew what it meant when I was fucking 9. Homophobia is COMMON in young’uns, especially in middle school. By the time they get to high school some of them start to realize that people are different and mellow the fuck out. Some don’t, though. It’s absolutely fucking excellent you put those values into your kids, but unfortunately the rest of the world didn’t.
I’m a teenager and YES, what he is saying is, for the most part, true. This generation SUCKS. So does yours. So did your grandparents when they were my age. Every generation is like this when they’re that age. In a way, this generation is better because racism has been stamped out (save a couple of assholes who let it live in through their kids). Can yourgeneration say the same?

My opinion of teenagers affects at most only those teenagers I encounter (very, very few these days, other than in passing), and only if I had some power over them, which I don’t. I did have power over them one time, when I worked at the liquor store and they would come in all the time trying to buy beer, and it was my pleasure to enforce the law upon them by denying them alcohol. So the one time I had power over them, I used it to enfoce the law. I don’t think I’ve ever exercised any power to ruin a teen’s life, or inconvenience him in something he was legally entitled to pursue.
So express your accusations of “ageism” if you will, but don’t expect me to go “oh my god, I had no idea I might be offending teenagers!” Lighten up.
