You know, it just never ceases to amaze me when I see some fuckjob like this get this far in public life. But he’s got all sorts of supporters, which scares the crap out of me. It actually would be less frightening—in a way----if he were just so damned stupid he couldn’t understand why church and state need to be seperated. Of course, that would mean that whatever school he went to somehow either taught him this stuff or let him graduate. But it’s somehow more frightening to think that he knows what he’s doing and doing so to exploit all the sheep in Alabama.
And that they’re falling for it. Enthusiastically so, even.
Hang on a sec. Moore doesn’t have as much support in this state as you seem to think. A survey done by the University of South Alabama early this summer showed that while a slim majority of Alabama voters supported the placement of the Ten Commandments monument in the rotunda, a large majority (something like 75 percent, if memory serves) said that Moore should remove the monument if so ordered by a federal judge.
Heck, my mother, who is almost 80 and devoutly religious, despises the man. So do her friends. And they would seem to be squarely in the demographic that would support him the most.
Well, that’s better. The guy just curls my hair, and the grandstanding seemed to go on forever. Also, hasn’t he pulled this stunt before? I seem to remember reading something about a similar Ten Commandments monument or plaque that he snuck into another official building.
This is the only monument he snuck into a building (which he literally did – placed it in the rotunda after everyone else had gone home); however, he made a name for himself by displaying a plaque with the Ten Commandments in his courtroom in Etowah County. He rode the resulting publicity/name recognition to his (now vacated) seat on the Alabama Supreme Court.
At the press conference yesterday there were approximately 50 supporters in attendance. I hardly think that qualifies as “all the sheep in Alabama” or an overwhelming majority that is clamoring to get him into the Governor’s mansion.
This is all anecdotal but here’s what I’ve seen: in the beginning of the whole Ten Commandments Controversy the state was polarized and became downright rabid when the media stirred it up enough - meaning it would die down at the water cooler for a while and then a new court date would be coming up and it would be on our TVs and newspapers again so the storm would blow up again. Bumper stickers popping up, signs in stores, etc… The day that Moore was ordered to remove the monument seemed to strengthen the resolve of all his supporters (again, this is just the feelings I was having reading and watching reports and talking to people). There was crying and wailing and praying and kneeling for the cameras. The final date was set for Moore to remove the Ten Commandments. And this is where I, personally, felt the winds change for stubborn Mr. Moore. When he refused the Federal judge’s orders and defied the law a lot of people got a bad taste in their mouths over it. I don’t know if it’s a sense of right and wrong WRT following the law, or if people had an uncomfortable reminder of Wallace’s stand in the schoolhouse door, but Moore lost support that day. My parents, for example, are your typical Republican Christian upper-middle class homeowner voters. They believe in the Ten Commandments and read the Bible. They think he’s a loon – and they’re not alone.
Like I said, this is all IMHO but please don’t assume we’re all slack-jawed yokels just waiting to elect him to the highest office we can get him into.
Don’t forget: the judicial ethics panel was made up of Alabamians too.
I happened to pass by the 700 Club while channel surfing this morning, and caught Moore ranting on about how the federal government are trampling his right to “acknowledge God.”
No, shithead, you can acknowledge God all you want. Just don’t force others to do so by putting your religion all over PUBLIC property! Meaning, it’s not YOUR property.
But that’s just it Zoff. Very few people are criticizing Moore solely for his beliefs. It’s mainly been because he placed his personal beliefs ahead of his sworn duty as a judge, and refused the court order. I don’t care what religion he is as long as he doesn’t let his religion get in the way of the laws he’s supposed to uphold.
Someone should tell Moore that the reason the monument didn’t belong in the rotunda is because here in the US, justice is not for Christians alone, but for all.
If he wants to put it on his lawn, hey, be my guest!
Moore was elected in 2000 with about 55% of the vote. He doesn’t need to lose a lot of that support to make it impossible for him to win a state-wide race. I would hope that there is enough of a “Christian, but not a lunatic” element in Alabama that his political career is ended.
Matthew 6:5-6: “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men…when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret…”
It’s amazing how many Christians miss this verse from their own holy book, isn’t it?
I’m pleased that he was removed from the bench, but I don’t think this is really a smackdown for him. It seems to me that being removed from the bench was what he WANTED.
Now he is famous, a “martyr” and free to run for political office, where his violation of the constitution will not be grounds for removing him from office.
Let us hope that the the majority of the good people of Alabama can see this for the cynical ploy that it is and reject his bid for higher office.
[sub] standing up for what he believes in my ass…[/sub]
(When I googled for “the” Roy Moore thread (the one in Electons) to post this in, I found that there are several old SDMB Roy Moore threads, so I thought what the heck, wake a zombie.)
“Gays, lesbians, and transgenders have joined forces with those who believe in abortion, sodomy, and destruction of all that we hold dear. Unless we stand together we will lose our country,” he added.
Damn, this moron almost made it to Washington. Wow.
