July 4, 2019: Trumpendence Day!

Look, we can all hate him equally, but in different ways…

What are you talking about? Have you read any of my previous posts? I write a post calling for honest criticisms of Trump, of which there are a thousand examples. Not to say that the people here, and elsewhere, are being dishonest, they really believe Trump believed in the planes. I think it’s bullshit. What about Obama, and the 57 states? Oh well that is explainable, he was just exhaused after a long day of campaiging. Well, that is true. But because we like Obama, we can explain it. But if it’s Trump, every single fucking thing he ever says or does is wrong. And 95% of the things he ever says or does ARE wrong.

My whole post was about keeping the discussion honest. Agree or disagree with it or not, but you have a wrong opinion about my opinion of Trump.

Yeah, OK. Sounds convincing. :smack:

I don’t know why I am bothering to defend myself against someone who has no clue about what I believe. Maybe because we are on the same side. But here are some past posts. Sorry, I don’t know how to give a direct link, but these are verbatim-

Any President is always going to have strong support from those in his party. Even in the final days of Watergate, 50% of Republicans still supported Nixon. And I’ll bet at least half of them knew he was a crook but didn’t care, because he was their crook.

Right now I think he still has over 80% approval among Republicans. He is their idiot, liar and con man.
Keep building the case. And keep letting him self-destruct. The Idiot can’t answer any question now without starting to rail against Mueller, Pelosi, the angry Democrats. He can’t even make a D-Day speech without doing so. I would like to see the motherfucker in jail tomorrow, but I would rather see him in the pit as the pendulum slowly comes down.

Our theme song - You wouldn’t be the same if you weren’t telling a lie… maybe 20 years in state will change your mind… I know when you are going down.

You’re the only one here in this thread defending Trump’s honor against the terrible things Dopers are saying about him. And claiming to “hate him” as much as anyone else. Maybe I have you wrong, but I can count on zero fingers the times I’ve felt the need to expend energy in any amount defending that motherfucker.

I suppose “the rockets’ red glare” came from ICBMs, too. Some people are really dumb and Trump may be one of them.

As for that pathetic “spectacle,” remember that the verbal build-up came from a guy with a button mushroom between his legs but thinks he’s Johnny Wadd.

Note to Trump: When you pay someone to have sex with you, you shouldn’t believe their complements about your junk.

I am not defending him. He is an idiot. He didn’t even have the self awareness to realize when he mentioned planes that he misspoke. He was a fucking parrot with no comprehension of what he was talking about. And the terrible things Dopers are saying about him, I agree with 99% of them.

If you believe that Trump believed in the planes, then by sharing those memes you are making an honest argument. I don’t believe that, and so I don’t feel right about sharing them. But I’ve done it anyway. All is fair in defeating Trump. So that is my conflict. If the only way to defeat Trump in the next election is with a deepfake video of him sucking Putin’s cock, I would probably justify that means. Not that this thing about the planes would be comparable to that, it is just the general principle. Make honest arguments. And IMO, the planes is not one. That is all I am saying. If you belive it is a legitimate argument, keep sharing the memes.

I’m puzzled by the effort it must take to assume that Trump genuinely understands that the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War are separate things, or to assume that Trump realizes that there were no airports during either war.

Some sort of faith must be involved—because there surely is no evidence for it.

Yes, the combination of the ‘airports’ references and mixing up the Revolutionary War with the War of 1812, within a few seconds of each other, seems more likely to be a product of ignorance and dementia, rather than a “misreading” of a Teleprompter.

I can’t see how any mentally-healthy person of at-least-average intelligence could “misread” such things in the first place. And then how could a mentally-healthy person of at-least-average intelligence just blithely go on as if what he’d said was perfectly fine? A mentally-healthy person of at-least-average intelligence would stop himself and say “that’s not right; what I meant is…”

I’m genuinely having difficulty seeing how Trump fans explain this to themselves. The double-think they must be having to employ will surely lead to actual brain damage, won’t it?

I realize that the standard Trump-fan “explanation” is that Trump is deliberately saying weird stuff to “pwn the libruls”—but left unexplained is how Trump making himself look mentally defective could possibly help him score points against liberals.

Trump is as familiar with American history books as he is with the US Constitution. To defend, or excuse any bullshit he says just blows me away.

Well hell, you have convinced me. Forget everything I said. Trump believed, or didn’t believe, about the planes, he had no idea what he was saying. He was a parrot.

I have to add this. The last thing I wanted in this world and forum was to come across as a Trump defender. I still don’t believe that Trump believed there were planes in the war, but the fact that he didn’t even realize what he was saying is the problem. That is a legitimate argument.

In other words, in trying to make a case for honest debate, I was an idiot. As Frasier once said, “It wll take a while for me to climb down from this particular high horse.”

This speech is the best sign yet of cognitive decline. Not the gaffes, but him not even trying to cover. That used to be his best (or one good) skill: inserting the correct word immediately as if he meant to say both. For instance, “CJ. Or DJ. He goes by both.”

Trump didn’t write the speech and, of course, wouldn’t have the slightest clue if it was historically accurate. Maybe he ad-libbed the airport thing but somebody wrote the stuff about Fort McHenry and the star-spangled banner. I assume that more than one person would look at the speech before they loaded it in the teleprompter. So who are the idiots that let this go? Yes, Trump is surrounded by incompetent fools but, really, no one noticed this mangled history? There are no fact checkers… ok, forget that. It just boggles the mind that the country is being “run” by these people.

You misspelled “ruined.”

And Obama once used a teleprompter too. So there you go. Both sides do it.

I doubt if Trump was even aware of what he was saying. These speeches are written for him, he doesn’t bother to read them in advance, and just spouts the words as they show up on the teleprompter. In his mind they are stuff he says to get applause and to reinforce his position at the center of attention - the actual content is irrelevant, so any errors never register with him.

I think this is exactly right. Someone could paste Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” into the teleprompter and if he could pronounce the words and it got applause, that’s all that would matter.

That would be hilarious.

My thoughts exactly. Trump didn’t write the speech, and probably never even looked at it until it was up on the teleprompter. So, are his speech writers that stupid? Or careless? Or just trolling him because they know he doesn’t know any better? Who knows?
