I work it both ways. As someone with, false modesty aside, a fairly extensive vocabulary, I can guess many words right off, especially the five letter ones. But often, the answer to the riddle will suggest itself then I work on the words. Or sometimes, I’ll get a couple of the words, get the riddle from that, then use the answer to the riddle to place letters within the scramble words that haven’t been solved yet.
Yeah, the riddle usually seems to be pretty obvious. Honestly–I might be more inclined to do the Jumble if the riddles were more than just an only slightly amusing play on words.
I focus on unscrambling the words as quickly as possible. I usually don’t care about the riddle. I challenge myself, and can often unscramble the four words in under 20 seconds. Sometimes 10. It’s a race for me.
It’s something about how I am wired, I can often simply see the words among the jumbled letters. But sometimes those 6-letter words can really trip me up.
