I loved those shows… has anything stepped up to the plate to take their place? And why on earth isn’t there an All Battlebots All The Time channel on basic cable? Is this whole “engineering” genre of television dead?

Those shows were brilliant. The only way I get my fix now is being forced to watch Mythbusters, and hope they have the challenges between Jamie and Adam for constructing some object by different means… But I loved Junkyard Wars and BattleBots!
This is an idea that needs to come back to TV!
FWIW, the Science Channel runs old Junkyard Wars episodes early Saturday & Sunday mornings. They also have a show, Master Blasters, that runs mid-week (re-runs on weekends); it’s a rocketry-oriented version of JW.
I’ve read online (probably at Slashdot) that Battlebots is scheduled to return to TV later this year, IIRC on Spike or G4.
