Jupiter's Legacy (Netflix) [Spoilers after first post]

That’s my guess too. (Except I only thought of the captain)

Nitpick: The Utopian. Paragon is the kid.

Non-nitpick: I think it’s a bit more than just being the kid of the Utopian, specifically. The Flare and his daughter seem to have a pretty good relationship. But Hutch and his father seem to have a dysfunctional relationship, at best. And as for Walt and his daughter, well…

When the Union are discussing who and what Not!Blackstar is, one of them mentions a parallel universe, as if that’s a thing. There’s some other hints here and there that this is supposed to be something like a standard super-hero universe, with varied origins, aliens, parallel worlds, magic, and so forth. It’s just that the precipitating event that set off the Age of Heroes in this universe was the one that gave the founding members of the Union of Justice their powers. Since the show is centered around them and their legacy, that’s the origin we see. And since they were the first, everyone else follows their example, with the costumes and capes, and the Code, even if they have completely unrelated origins.

But it was not at all clear, one way or the other.

Right, thanks for the correction.

I haven’t met Walter’s daughter yet, or seen any interaction between Hutch and his dad.

That was my impression. Blackstar is clearly a Science Villain.

Or become supervillains. Although even Hutch’s crew seemed to have codenames.

I think twenty or even ten years ago this might have been an innovative show or series. Now it’s just rehashing some old ideas with a couple neat concepts thrown in for spice. Maybe we’re just too used to the idea of superheroes using lethal force. Annoying that the only people we hear about changing the world or what people should do with their superpowers seem to be the straight white males. Duhamel does a decent job, I suppose, as Jesus Superman and Ian Quinlan was a standout IMHO. And I’m sad that the men in monkey masks in the first episode weren’t actual sentient monkeymen.

So it wasn’t just me…

Well, the comics came out in 2013 so that’s about 8 years. And the Kingdom Come comics came out in 1996. So yeah the story isn’t really new or innovative.

I finished the show so far and it’s different enough from Volume 1 of the comics that I’m curious to see where they are going to go next.

It definitely gets better as it moves forward.

So it looks like the show is a one-and-done, but they’re gonna do a spinoff called SUPERCROOKS. ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ Done at Netflix as Streamer Explores Other Millarworld Projects – The Hollywood Reporter

Maybe that will be better, but I’m not confident.

It’s not “one and done”, one and done shows tell a coherent story in one season. This was just Netflix being Netflix.

Yeah, the definitely didn’t give the show long enough to even get to the better stuff.

It’s like this first season was a “Hey get to know these characters before we get to the good story coming up”. And then season 2 would have been the story.

And Netflix was like, “What? It didn’t make 5 billion dollars before it even got into the good part? Cancel!”

Screw Netflix and their annoying cancellations. Here’s part of a story - no, no conclusion for you. Start this different story instead, we’ll finish it this time, we promise!

Maybe they should be more careful about what they greenlight and stick with them longer instead of throwing everything at the wall and canceling what doesn’t stick. I don’t much like getting involved with stories and then never finishing them, and that’s getting to be more the rule than the exception.

Another story I read pegged the cost of Season 1 at $200 million. I can understand why Netflix had high expectations based on that, but I’m disappointed that the show got cancelled.

And the new Supercrooks show will be anime, a live-action version in simultaneous development also got dropped.

Releasing so close to the much better, and I imagine significantly cheaper “Invincible” probably doomed it.

I would think if you’re gonna spend that much you’d wait a little bit to see if it’ll return that instead of basically giving it a week and not seeing the numbers you want and then canceling. If they had let it go into a Season 2 they could have explained a lot which would have made season 1 look a lot better.

Plus I saw no advertising for this show. I was at the comic shop and overheard some guys talking about the show and how it was going to be Netflix’s answer to The Boys. So I went over and bought the comics so I could get a jump on the story and then went and looked for it on Netflix, didn’t see it and googled around until I found some obscure article mentioning it and it’s release. Then I wrote my self a note and taped it up on my things to do board as a reminder.

I didn’t start seeing things from Netflix about the show until like a week out.

I finished watching Supercrooks over the weekend. It was more than a little strange having a Japanese cartoon spin-off of a canceled American live-action show; some of the characters seemed like they wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of Sailor Moon and on the other hand you have a relatively realistic animated version of Josh Duhamel in old-age makeup.

The plot was your basic heist movie with silly plot twists (not quite as silly as Red Notice, but still): light-hearted with quite a bit of gore (e.g. two brothers who can regenerate after being torn into little pieces). I liked it, but I certainly didn’t love it.

I kept seeing Netflix pushing Supercrooks, but I had no idea it was supposed to be in the Jupiter’s Legacy universe. I might actually watch it now.

As long as you don’t expect more than a few token references to Jupiter’s Legacy. There really isn’t much of a connection other than a couple of cameo appearances.

Having read the original graphic novel, I found Supercrooks meh. The final four heist episodes recreated the comics almost exactly, and were quite good. The other episodes that essentially were an extended backstory leading up to it were less good, with a few exceptions. (Zombie attack!). In addition, the extra material added a ton of extra plot holes.

There were a lot of characters involved in the heist, so it makes sense to introduce them a few at a time rather than all at once. I’m not sure they needed to spend so much time on Johnny’s childhood or his dopey villain friends, though.

Re Supercrooks: Some shows, I skip the intro after the first one. For this show I didn’t, mainly because of the music (and I’ll admit, the animated cute girl).
