Just bought a Macbook Pro, recommend some games for Macs.

It’s the smaller 13" model with integrated graphics and it’s a Mac, so obviously I didn’t buy it as a mobile gaming machine, but that doesn’t mean I won’t want to play some games on it.

So what are some good games I can play on this thing?

I like FPS, turn based strategy, and some RPG (not JRPG). I play a lot of racing games on my Xbox but I don’t know that I’d play those on the laptop.

You can get Civ 4 + Expansions for Mac on Steam for $7 right now. That’ll run and is a very good turn-based strategy game.

Cool. I’m familiar with the Civ games but haven’t played any seriously since Civ II.

Starcraft 2 is my current obsession. Great game, and if you like turn based strategy, it’s not a huge leap to think you’d like an RTS as well.

I also second the recommendation of Civ 4. I haven’t played 5, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you could run it as well.

Steam has quite a decent collection of Mac games now. More all the time.

You may be able to play HL2, Portal, etc. They play pretty well on my 15"-er

I like the idea of RTS games, but I’ve never really liked the implementation. I don’t particularly enjoy the resource gathering / base building side of things, but I’m always keen to give something a go. Is there a demo for Starcraft 2?

There’s a bit of a step up to the 15" and larger Macbook Pros as they have dedicated graphics cards and a better processor but then HL2 and Portal are pretty old now. I’ve played them on the Xbox 360 but haven’t played the subsequent HL episodes.

BTW, I meant to mention that this is my first Mac, yay.

Redline, from Ambrosia software, is a fun racing game. http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/redline/

HL2, Portal, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 all run fine on my MacBook (non-Pro).

I’d check out Steam’s Mac offerings; that’s where most of my Mac games have come from. Torchlight is an excellent action-RPG that’s worth checking out.

As far as I can tell the 13" Macbook Pro is essentially just a Macbook but with an aluminium case and support for more RAM. The larger Pros have better graphics but the 13" is the same integrated chip with shared RAM as the Macbook. (So it’s good to know these things run on a Macbook.)
