Just changed OS to MS2000 question

I just formated my H/D and installed MS 2000 professional, I have noticed a few interesting security features already. My question is to any experienced users, is there a way to keep people from accessing your favorites IE folders with this OS version? The more important question (and the more likely I feel can be accomplished) is there a way to lock out folders or somehow create a tier of access w/out user logons and accesibilities?

Thanks

Ok, first of all the file system needs to be NTFS. Without this you cannot control file-level security.

Your IE favourites folder is part of your user profile. In Windows 2000, this is stored in a folder called C:\Documents and Settings.
If you have a look at the NTFS properties for your profile (which would be a subdirectory off C:\Documents and Settings), you’ll find that, from memory, only you and Administrators and the SYSTEM account have rights to it. That should be sufficient to stop someone else from looking at this folder.

As to your other question, there is no way to set up security without some form of authentication. When you log onto a Win2k system, the process of logging on creates a security token - this is compared to the ACLs (Access Control Lists) that dictate who has access to what file. You can’t have one without the other. There may be third party tools that do this - but why bother? You have the resources already.

Hope this helps,
Max.

Welcome to the SDMB, IfYouDidWouldI?IfIDidWouldYou?. You may have noticed the change in the shape of the forum’s title page when you submitted your question. It squished the lines around to acommodate your unusually long name.

I have no authority whatever on this board. However, I respectfully ask that you consider shortening your board name so as not to reconfigure the format every time you post. This board’s software is reputed to run on the efforts of a few overworked hampsters running in their little wheels. The little guys don’t need any extra strain.
