Can you lock a favorites folder in IE6?

Well…can you?

I have a few entries in my favorites that I would like to put in a single folder and limit access whether by password or whatever other means there are.

Looks like you can do it in Win 2K, when I right click on a folder in favorites I can assign or deny rights to whatever user I want, which means I can control read, write and other permissions.

Yup, EasyPhil has it. Right-click on the folder, and choose “Sharing and Security…” The little window that pops up, however, may be hidden by everything else, so you’ll think that nothing’s happened: minimize everything else, including the IE window, and you’ll be at the right place to protect that folder. (This is IE6 under WinXP Home, BTW.)

Pardon me for not giving all the needed information. I am using windows 98 and there is no “Sharing and Security” tab.

In WIN9X you cannot do that but you can do File - Import/Export - favorites. Export your favorites to a file and then encrypt it or put it in a safe place. Later you can import it again.

Upgrade to 2K. That’s pretty much your only option. Security in win98 is a joke.

Go to PC world’s website and look in their download section. There is a utility call FAVLOCK that sounds like what you are looking for. The utility allows you to secure selected folder(s) or subfolder(s). You need to use a password (of your creation) to unlock the folder.

Sounds like what I’m looking for Jim, problem is…I can’t find it! Would you be kind enough to provide a link?

I have win98 and I can set the properties to read only. Just right click the folder choose propertiesand check the read only box.

Ooops, sorry, didn’t read close enough. Just thought you wanted to protect the files. Not access.

I guess I don’t understand, I can do that too but then I can still open the folder and click on any item in it and it opens.

What I would like to do is to just have one private folder in my favorites that I can put my porn links (or whatever) in to keep them from my kids prying eyes.

Yep, I corrected myself. Didn’t read your question close enough.

I think you could just bury the links. It should not have to be in a favorites folder.

Create an obscure sounding folder down in the system somewhere and copy your links there. Access them through explorer, or drag and drop them into an open browser.

That’s what I’d do

My error. It’s PC Magazine, not PC World. Here’s the link.

That looks exactly like what I was looking for Jim, thank you. And many thanks to the rest of you as well.

No intention on hijacking this post, but is there a way this can be done in Windows ME?

Sorry for a second reply but I couldn’t edit my previous message. I should have added, without d/ling utilities or changing folder properties. Is there a security option in ME?
