Sock, if I had to take a WAG.
Every time I see a banned poster and there is no thread in ATMB, I assume he was either a sock or a troll. I also suspect an e-mail to a mod is the preferred method of asking for this sort of information.
Starve them of the oxygen of publicity, and all that.
Er, why? Would the mod email me back saying, “I’m glad you asked this in email. He was banned for soliciting goat prostitution. I didn’t want everyone else to know.” If it’s my business, it’s everyone’s business.

They don’t want the person banned to be gloating over the fact that people are paying attention to them in a public forum. They would much prefer that you ask privately if you want to know, so that there is no more attention paid.
You posted before I finished my last post.
That said, gimme a break. The person is banned; they can’t respond. What you’re saying is akin to telling a child, “Just ignore that boy who’s making fun of you. He’s trying to get a rise out of you.” I’d like to think we’re all adults here, even banned posters.
I’m not trying to start an argument (especially not here on ATMB), but “starving [a banned poster] of publicity” is just silly.

It’s not, because we want them to go away. If we keep talking about them, they’ll hang around and be tempted to make (another, in some cases) sock to harass us with.
The thing about sock-puppets and trolls and the like is that they crave attention. We don’t want to give them attention, and we usually want to destroy their past posts, as well.
The hope is that they will take the hint that they’re not wanted here, and then move on.
We therefore discourage threads like this, which just gives them attention. Agent Foxtrot, the assumption that “even banned posters” can act like adults is not borne out by our past experience, at least not when it comes to trolls and socks.
I’m closing this thread,. Please, if you must know why someone was banned, use email… as described in FAQ - Guidelines to posting on the SDMB, see Post #18.
