My forums are: Netflix. Hulu plus and On Demand.
I do like a good story plot but I’m also interested in movies with a lot of visual effects (eye candy) type stuff.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Avatar DVD?
I dont think Netflix/Stream has anything I want to see, and I still pay for it.
Maybe, The Mosquito Coast or Close Encounters?
Random selection that fits your criteria:
Super 8
Zombieland
Attack the Block
Captain America
Prince of Persia
Kung Fu Panda 2
Movies that have a lot of special effects, eh?
Well, if you rate special effects above plot, here’s the movies I’ve seen that I’ve found to have the best special effects (please note that some of these movies’ plotlines suck royally, however):
2012
Bad Boys 2
G.I. Joe
Any of the Die Hards (especially after 2)
Any of the Transformer movies
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Titanic (yes, I went there)
Any Marvel superhero movie
All on Netflix:
Cliffhanger
Black Hawk Down
Iron Man 2
Ong Bak 2
Trollhunter
Aeon Flux
Some documentaries on Netflix:
WWII in HD
The Blue Planet (series)
Encounters at the End of the World
Journey into Amazing Caves
Everest: IMAX
Attack of the Clones. The space battles will rock the big screen. Also, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
WTF? He asks for movies with a good plot and amazing special effects, and you suggest Mosquito Coast?
Lord of the Rings (in general, the SFX gets better each movie)
The freeway sequence from the second Matrix movie
Brian
Go for the big, sprawling, blockbuster, summer popcorn films!
Most of them were designed for watching on big screens.
Indiana Jones series, Star Treks, Star Wars, Bourne series, Jaws…and you might be surprised to see that even the old classics like Wizard of Oz, Casablanca and Gone With The Wind take on a new life when seen on your “giant ass flat screen”.
Lawrence of Arabia.
I’ll give you three that aren’t likely to be mentioned that I doubt they are available on Netflix streaming, but they do look freaking awesome on a huge screen:
Pleasantville has visual moments that I’d like to see on a big screen again. Great movie, too.
Barry Lyndon
Nature documentaries:
Life (with David Attenborough)
Planet Earth
Blue Planet
Oceans
Winged Migration
Microcosmos
Apocolypto
Visually stunning films that are great for big screens
Holy Mountain directed by Alejandro Jodorowski
Santa Sangre also directed by Alejandro Jodorowski
Apocalypse Now directed by Francis F Coppola
The Abyss directed by James Cameron
Eraserhead directed by David Lynch
Mulholland Drive also directed by David Lynch
Cleopatra directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Big Fish directed by Tim Burton
Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott
Spaceballs directed by Mel Gibson
I 2nd the Barry Lyndon suggestion. Most other Kubrick films apply too.
A Man for all Seasons
Wind
Not a lot of eye candy SFX, but Lawrence of Arabia is best on a big screen. The outdoor desert vistas are so dramatic that scaling them down is depressing. I saw the film in Detroit, at the Fox Theater, in 1989, when the theater was re-opened. Huge movie screen, and I fell for Peter O’Toole all over again.
